Warsan Shire once said, "At the end of the day, it isn't where I came from. Maybe home is somewhere I'm going and never have been before." If this quote does not fit my life, I do not know what quote does. This past semester I studied away in St. Croix (Virgin Islands). Of course, there were many things that I disliked, and many things that did not go my way. The education was sub-par, and the amenities that I had were "old school" and life "took forever," it seemed. However, I also learned that when things take forever, It does not mean that it is bad or below-average, in fact, it means we have more time to enjoy life.
Everyone wants something different out of life, and that's OK; but, do we, as a human race, not see the value of long dinners, long conversations, faulty technology, and living life as a good thing? Are we so wrapped up in our technology and the fast-paced lifestyle where we are blinded by how things are supposed to go?
No, the island life is not for everyone, trust me. You never know, though, you may just have a house and not a home. Home is where you feel (for the most part) genuinely happy, it is where many of the insecurities and problems just melt away. At your "home" does this happen? If not, maybe you haven't found your home yet. Even if you have found your home, do not stay in your home forever-- it is OK to explore the world. Staying in the same place your whole life is a little like staying in your bedroom the whole day... it may be needed and feel good at times, but after awhile you feel cooped up and bored.
Where is your home at? Where do you feel the most in tuned with people and nature?
For me, it is St. Croix.
