Dear people serving our country,
Now that Veteran's Day has passed and our country has once again turned its back on you I want to start this by saying thank you. Thank you for being the brave men and women that you are. Without you we wouldn't have the freedom that we so easily take for granted. It takes a certain kind of person to decide that they want to defend their country and you have the courage to do just that. Something many of us do not have.
It's truly heartbreaking to know that you are willing to give your life to get nothing in return. Instead you sometimes are subject to scrutiny, ridicule and faced with the ungrateful public every day. And from the bottom of my heart I am truly sorry.
The amount of care that you, our veterans, receive from this country is unbelievably and tastelessly inadequate. It's almost as though they expect so much out of you and give nothing in return. The strong people you are go overseas and fight putting your life on the line and seeing things many of us will never see a day in our lives.
Many of you will suffer every day because of the horrors of war that you have seen. Whether you've lost a limb, gained PTSD or returned home just to live on the streets. Your every day life has been altered and affected because you chose to serve our country. On any given night, in any given city 49,933 of you brave men and women are living on the street. That is just completely unacceptable. Instead of focusing on those who are perfectly able but choose not to work we need to turn our attention to you. The men and women who deserve to have their country take care of them are the men and women who fought for it.
Taking one day out of the year to thank you is a poor way to repay you for your service. Instead we should be providing you with better medical care, mental health support and financial assistance that you need. I personally don't know what it's like to face hardship after having been away fighting a war, but I do know that many of you do. In my life I've been blessed to meet, befriend and even love a war veteran. The struggles I saw them face just deepened the amount of admiration and respect I have for each and every one of you.
Thank you.
