Dear Judge Aaron Persky,
I want to inform you what message you sent to the public after sentencing Brock Turner to only six months in JAIL although Brock Turner, the rapist, only had to serve three of those six months due to good behavior.
You sent out the message it's okay to rape. You didn't want to ruin this poor rich boy's life. You were so worried about how his sentencing would hurt his chances of a life rather than being worried about the woman he raped life. Is her life not worth something? You didn't seem to care about the fact she had to hear about her rape through media clips and news reports. She woke up in a hospital bed with missing underwear. You didn't seem too worried about the after math of her. You didn't seem to worried about how her life would play out after all of this.
Stealing or selling pot will land you in prison longer than Brock Turner was in jail for. How are you comfortable knowing that? How do you sleep at night knowing a young girls life was changed forever?
We set the blame on the victims typically. When a victim goes to report a rape the first question typically asked is "Were you drinking?" Why is this even a question that we take so seriously? I mean, It does not matter if you were drinking. It does not matter if someone is wearing a low cut shirt. WHEN YOU SAY NO IT MEANS NO. Also if you're passed out and can't say no it's still rape. I mean I figured you're many years of schooling would have taught you that but clearly it taught you it's okay to let rapist get off the hook.
What gets me is no one really stood up for this girl except the public. Stanford did kick good ol' Brock out, but then released tips on how to be safe. Their suggestions included "be careful when drinking". Of course, be careful when drinking, but I should be able to go out and have drinks without having a fear of being raped. Rapes also happen when both parties are sober just in case your simple mind doesn't grasp that. It was your job to stand up for this girl. It was your job to make her feel protected. Did you not listen to her testimony? Did you not grasp the damage it has done to her? What if it was your daughter?
This sort of thing doesn't happen once in a blue moon. A woman is raped every two minutes, and half of the time it is not reported due to the terrible process. Even those who do try to prosecute rarely does justice get served. It's unfortunate. We should have control over our bodies. We should have the right to say no and it mean no. We should be able to trust the justice system to do the right thing.
I am sure you'll be pleased to know Brock Turner is now on his couch live tweeting about all the protesters and how he's blessed. He has support groups praying for his safety every day. He's blessed because you didn't make him think his crime was a crime. You didn't make him feel he did anything wrong, if anything you condoned his behavior.
Judge Persky, you did not do the right thing. You cared more about Brock Turner when you shouldn't have. You wouldn't have even had to know who he was if he didn't decide it was okay to rape someone who was passed out.
I will say thank you for waking a nation up. A nation who was blinded but now they see that rapists are getting off the hook. Your inability to do your job has shown people there is not justice when it comes to rapes, but I will tell you one day there will be, and I will continue to fight for this change.
