An Open Letter To The Girl Who Strives For Perfection

To the girl who strives to be perfect:

Why do we as girls try to look perfect and search for the perfect body or perfect objects? Why do we as girls try to compete against other girls? Why do we as girls stalk other girls on social media and wish we looked just like them? There are several reasons as to why we try to be the perfect girl.

We try to be perfect because that is what guys expect. They want the perfect girl, with the perfect face, the perfect body, etc. It is basically as simple as that. We want to be the perfect girl for that guy who we believe is so perfect. But in reality, if you let a guy dictate your opinion then you are truly letting them decide what you do and how to live your life. So why let a guy tell us how to live our life?

Instead of putting other girls down and trying so hard for that guy, I think we should be standing together and picking each other up. It does not matter what we look like. It does not matter how big we are or how little we are. It does not matter if you wear loads of makeup or nothing at all. It does not matter the types of clothes you wear. None of that should matter to us. At all.

God made us perfect in his eyes. Those are the only eyes we should be concerned on how we look. As the Bible states, “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of our inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” The question will always be, why do we fight against this and not listen to this? Why do we try so hard?

In our generation, we judge. Human beings are the most judgmental living, breathing things that set foot on this earth. We need to lift each other up. We look at people and ask why is she wearing that? Why does she act that way? We are all unique in our own way. So stop putting everyone down. Stop being judgmental to the girl who can barely afford new shoes. Stop being judgmental to the girl who can’t afford a new dress. Everyone is perfect in their own way. Yes, at the beginning I asked why do we try to be perfect and that we need to stop. But we are already perfect and need to just be ourselves. Express yourself. Believe in yourself. You are you for a reason and we're created that way. Smile, look at yourself in the mirror and say “I am perfect the way I am.” Stop trying to change who you are for other people. Being you is the best you can be.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
