To The Average Cup Of Joe

You're more than you think

To The Average Cup Of Joe

Dear Average Joe,

I know how you feel. You go to school or work every day and do the same job that becomes a routine. You don’t come from any special family or background. The major you choose probably isn’t going to change the world. You’re just a normal person doing normal things. You fill your days with trips to the grocery store, homework, work, watching tv, cooking dinner, and other busy tasks. This has been something that constantly causes disappointment and frustration with me.

I want to change the world. I want to be out in the world helping people but instead, I’m sitting in my dorm doing homework. I’m studying to work in a PR department of a big business, and have become so focused on what I want my future to be that it doesn’t even cause excitement anymore just frustration. I watch the news and see all of these people struggling and know that I could be doing something. I know that I'm so much better off than a majority of the population and it pains me. The truth is I'm doing exactly what I need to be doing and I'm placed perfectly.

You don’t have to change the world to be a spectacular person. Every day you have little opportunities to change someone’s day. Compliment someone’s outfit, help someone with a project, tip a little extra when you go out, all of these things impact someone. God has placed you where you are for a reason. He is using you in ways you may not even be aware of, so instead of focusing on how you could be changing the world focus on moments in your day and the people around you. Those people are your mission. Matthew 5:14-16 says “You are the light of the world a city set on a hill cannot be hidden, nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand and it gives light to all in the room.” If you’re always focusing on what your future looks like or how much you want to be helping someone you’re missing out. Be still in the small moments and be kind to those around you. Doing this makes you more than an average cup of joe, you’re more like a white chocolate mocha with a caramel drizzle. Go out and be awesome, focus on the people around you and make the most of where you’re placed now. You're doing better than fine.

Sincerely,

A Cup of Joe brewing to be better

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
