Dear $20 Bill,
You were born in the year of 1861 and have been through quite a few changes throughout the many years. Before the Fed existed you had on you George Washington, Lady Liberty, James Garfield, a bunch of people I frankly have never heard of, and even Pocahontas, which in total numbers to 13 different design changes, many of them involving different people. When the Fed was created, your design simply got boring though. You went from changing up your design often to having Grover Cleveland for 14 years to having Andrew Jackson for the past 88 years. Sorry, but you got dull. You are well overdue for some change.
A lovely campaign known as “Women on 20’s” has your back, my friend. They fully see that the face you currently bear doesn’t exactly fit you, not to mention ... you’re long overdue for a new one. Why doesn’t Jackson fit you, you ask? Well, for one thing, he never supported the existence of you to begin with. He hated paper money and preferred gold and silver coins over, well, you and your friends. Kind of ironic for him to be on paper money then, right? The other thing? It’s quite a doozy. Jackson is also known for the “Indian Removal Act of 1830” which then resulted in the Trail of Tears. Jackson is distinctly known for a mass relocation of people from their homes. Do you really want someone like that to represent you still? Didn’t think so.
So, what does “Women on 20’s” have to do with fixing you? Great question! The campaign has made great strides in fixing you by, well, pushing for a woman to replace Jackson. The plan is to have the new design is planned to be out by the year 2020 which will be the 100-year anniversary of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote (see the connection with the number 20?). The possible women were chosen due to them being ones who have stood out above the rest. Such nominees included Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony and many others. The “Women on 20’s” campaign has achieved their goal, by the way, and one of these women will be the new face of you.
So, who’s the winner? Harriet Tubman!
You should be mighty proud, my green friend. Harriet is someone that is underappreciated. Many just think of the Underground Railroad and connect her and that’s it, but she is so much more! She was a healer, a scout, a spy and so much more for the Union and was vital to the North during the Civil War. In 1863, she even led an armed raid to free 100 slaves in the South. In death, she was even laid to rest with military honors as she was one of the first African American women to serve in the military. That’s just brushing the surface with her even, there’s so much more to her!
Now, who seems more appropriate? Jackson or Tubman? Yes, Jackson did good things in his life, but there is much that tarnishes his reputation. Tubman? She was quite an amazing lady, and you should be mighty proud for her to be your new face in a few years.
I’d like to leave you with a quote from your new visage: “If you hear the dogs, keep going. If you see the torches in the woods, keep going. If there's shouting after you, keep going. Don't ever stop. Keep going. If you want a taste of freedom, keep going.”
