You are a blessing and a curse. You let us reach our friends and family that aren’t close to you, but yet you brain wash us into not appreciating what is in front of us. When we are at the dinner table we have to fight the urge to not check you and I honestly hate that I depend on you. We literally need to lock our phones away so we don't see it and feel the need to check if someone texted us or snapped us.
You know when you are at dinner with your family and you take a moment to look around and see how many people are on their electronics? People literally bring their kids' iPads to dinner to distract them so they could be on their phone. At my school, as soon as people get out of class they immediately check their phones, not talk to their friends right in front of them. When you hang out with your friends now, you sit in a circle and sit on your phone. Why?! What stupid thing caused us to view this as a social norm? Why do we feel like we need to be somewhere else when we are in another place? Why do we feel the need to talk to someone else when there are people right in front of us? I don’t understand. Is it because we are spoiled? Or that we will never be happy until we have more? Society now is so different from what it used to be. We didn’t have to consider taking a charger so you have your phone to last the day, you didn’t have to worry about how many likes you get on Instagram. Discussing where you got that app didn’t matter to people then. Now, this isn’t to totally shit on the whole concept of smartphones and electronics. I love them-- it is so convenient and it does pass the time, but I just hate seeing other people obsessed with their phones and knowing that I'm a part of that group. I hate that I have been told to get off my phone at the dinner table. But I fear that there's no way to escape it.
I worry about the future. If we are so obsessed with our phones now, then what next? Are we going to have them sewn to our bodies? That's a scary thought. I can't wrap my head around the fact that within 20 years, phones have come so far. In a way, it's impressive, but at the same time frightening, because what will come next?
Here's what we do need to do. We need to take in what's in front of us. Instead of filming the whole concert, take it in! With the naked eye is the best way you'll ever see it. Take a moment and look around you; look at the people you are with before you decide to start another conversation with someone else, because you can see them another time. Give the people you are with your undivided attention.
