An Open Letter To Senior Week

All throughout high school I looked forward to all of the things I would experience my senior year. I knew there were so many things I was about to do for the last time, ranging from attending my last rivalry football game, to my last prom... but there was also something else I was about to do for the first time: senior week. I watched as my older brother went off to senior week after he graduated and came home wishing he could go back. This is when my excitement kicked in. Senior week is when your senior class and the senior class of surrounding high schools goes to Ocean City, Maryland during the last week in June and has their last celebration together as a class.

People come home from senior week with many different experiences--some come home with piercings, others come home with a lizard, and unfortunately some come home with a citation. I didn’t come home with any of those, which I’m thankful for, although maybe I wouldn’t mind having a lizard.

Senior week can be the craziest week of your life for many reasons. As a current freshman in college, I would never go back to senior week this year. But if I could relive my senior week, I would do it without hesitation. You rent out rooms for you and your friends to stay in and usually you over pay for where you stay. In my senior week house, we had eight girls, but the house only had three beds and the majority or the week, other friends would be sleeping in our house. I slept in a queen bed with two of my best friends and it was a bonding experience, to say the least.

Another interesting part of senior week was eight girls trying to schedule when to shower every day, since there was only one shower in the house. Getting ready started around 3 p.m. and ended around 6 p.m. every day. Naps after you shower are a necessity during senior week. One day I slept while my best friend blow dried my hair. Make sure you go to senior week with a good friend who will do that for you.

My advice to seniors who about to attend their first senior week is to cherish it. This is a week you’ll never get to experience the same way again. After this week, you and all of your friends are going to part ways and go to college, or find your place in this world outside of high school. Some of these friends you’ll keep in touch with but you won’t see every day like you used to.

After high school, everything changes. Some things you never expect to happen and you learn the hard way that you’ll never get these memories back.

Ideally, you’ll want to have a safe week. You’ll want to avoid even something as simple as J-walking. If your landlord comes knocking at your door, cooperate, because they can and will evict you. Also, it’s probably not a good idea to lift people through your window... landlords don’t seem to like that either. Instead, go to the beach at 5 a.m. and watch the sunrise, you’ll most likely be up and it’s a beautiful sight to see. Just don’t fall asleep on the beach. Go to other schools' houses and have fun with their senior class, but if your best friend turns the heat up to 100 degrees and says, “Now let’s get out of here,” leave before you start trouble.

Some of the best memories you’ll have with your friends from high school come from senior week. So to the Class of 2016, have fun.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
