Dear Generation Y,
I'm not even sure if that's the technical name for our generation – the 90's kids, but I'm going to run with it.
So here's the thing. We're all getting ready to be adults; some of us are already married and having kids and finding jobs and buying houses...It's here. And while we are at this pivotal point in our individual lives, the world is also at a pivotal point.
To put it bluntly, the world is falling apart. Wars are being fought over basic human right, race is still dividing America in two and politics are taking precedent over humanity towards others. The world is falling apart at our feet, and somehow we are still a generation of such apathy. We no longer care about anyone other than ourselves.
We want higher minimum wage so our paychecks can be higher, but we wouldn't dare give a dollar of that paycheck to the homeless guy down the street. We want free college so we can get our own degrees, but who cares about the children unable to get education in Africa? We want acceptance for who we are, but we refuse to give any respect to others. We want Congress to pass laws in our favor, but we won't put in the effort to research candidates and get off our butts to vote.
We are so incredibly ethically diverse, yet not diverse in our opinions. We are so open-minded to change and new ideals, yet so close-minded to traditions. We are wonderful at accepting how different we are, yet we see no value in being anything else. We have come so far, yet we are still so far behind. We have learned from the mistakes of generations past, but we refuse to listen to any of the successes those generations had. In our minds, we are the best generation. In our minds, we deserve the world as a "human right," but we have little interest in earning what we ask for.
To put it bluntly, we are an incredibly entitled and apathetic generation. And it has to stop.
Here in a few short years, we are going to be in charge. Your roommate who's studying for the LSATs? He's our next Congressman. The girl you waitress with on the weekends? She's going to teach your kid's kindergarten class. Soon, our generation will be the doctors, lawyers, teachers and businessmen and women that are running America and the world. So why don't we care more?
We have so much power. We have the power to stop the race divide. We have the power to put America back on the map as the best country in the world. We have the power to finally fix the budget deficit. Yet, we choose to sit back, binge-watch Netflix and choose our political views based off of what we see on Facebook.
Whether we like it or not, some day very soon the world will be looking to us for the future, and one of two things will happen. Either we will stand tall, united together to fix the wrongs generations before ours created. Or we will be the generation that ruins what little light we have left in this world. It's up to us.
