An Open Letter To My Twin

An Open Letter To My Twin
Erin Duffy

Hey there, twin,

Thanks for always being around. Not many people are fortunate enough to have a built-in best friend from day one. Let me tell you, though, it has not always been easy sharing a birthday and age with you. From the very beginning, Mom and Dad had to buy two of everything (I blame this on your lack of patience and ability to share, but who am I kidding because 99 percent of the time, it was probably me); like that one time, when we were five and they brought home only one toy car for us to drive. Big problem.

There are things that only you and I (and others of our special kind) will understand. There’s a close bond between us that most other siblings probably don’t experience and will never experience. However, with that said, twin telepathy has never been a real thing. I have no clue what you’re thinking and I can promise you most other twins probably can’t read each others minds either. So, all you non-twin people reading this, stop asking about it; I know this is hard for you to hear. Now, I’m not saying there isn’t some special connection between twins. As a kid I used to feel sad when you were sad and mad when you were mad, but that’s about the extent of our special powers. It could be different for girl-girl twins and boy-boy twins, but I would say that it’s about the same in these instances too.

As if being robbed of this special power isn’t enough, oftentimes you’ll see sets of twins, as babies, in identical sets of clothing. Thank the Lord that Mom never subjected us to such torture. In fact, I praise her for dressing us in different colors, even if it was just to tell us apart when we were both bald and chubby -- I’m not even insulted at all. It beat wearing the exact same outfit as you, just so people would know we were twins. I’m not trying to wear the same blue onesie as you. No offense, you have great style, but I don’t want to look like you now, and I didn’t when I was two.

I’ll tell you though, one of my favorite parts about being a twin with you is the surprise and shock I get to see on people’s faces who didn’t know this about us before. It’s the craziest thing how I can know someone for over a year, and the second they find out I’m twins with you, it’s like they just learned there’s life on Mars or something. We’re a pretty big deal, I know. I’m not sure what the percentage of twins on Earth is, but I think we’re kind of like a walking miracle, so at least we’ve got that going for us. You have other uses too though. I’ve always had someone to share Mom and Dad’s anger with. When we were younger, and I did something wrong that you were somehow involved in, you were going down with me, simple as that. We’ve been in it together buddy, and we’re still doing life together, both the good and bad.

Sincerely,

The best twin sister in the whole wide world

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
