Dear Amma and Papa,
I'm so thankful to have you guys as parents. You guys have raised me to have strong values and morals, which I still use in everyday life. You have taught me right from wrong as well as good from bad. I'm so fortunate to have learned the South Indian culture, because it's like a whole other world that some people can only dream about! The food, the clothing, the traditions, and most importantly. the love inspires me to keep my heritage close.
But, I'm not traditional.
I understand Indian culture is different from American culture, believe me I know. Going home from school is basically like going to another country. I never want to disappoint or upset you guys, but I can't be perfect and I won't try to be.
I understand the value of education and acquiring knowledge, that's why I'm trying my hardest in school but that's not all I want. I don't want to just get some STEM degree and work a nine to five job. I don't believe that the point of life is just to have kids and provide for them and I certainly don't believe everyone outside the culture is going to hurt me.
I love tattoos, piercings, colored hair, bright nails, and short shorts! I love being spontaneous and taking an occasional break from rational thinking. I love that you guys let me express myself on my own time and at home. I can respect that you guys only ask me not to be myself in front of your much more conservative peers... because you guys don't want me to be at the end of the judgment and backlash from them. I understand that you guys are just protecting me.
I hope you guys know that I really love you, both of you have lived your lives for me and my brother; sacrificed your wants and needs to provide for us. No matter what time, no matter where, you guys are always there.
Even though I'm not going to be some big shot doctor one day, I'm going to be me, living by the morals and values you have instilled in me and just doing what is right.
Umma:*
Love your non-traditional, Indian daughter,
Abby
