An Open Letter To My Semester Abroad

Right now, I’m sitting on the bare floor of the room I borrowed for the past four months surrounded by clothes, pictures, books, and memories of our time together that I am attempting to cram into two suitcases and a backpack.

As I walk through the German streets these last few nights, I will inhale clouds of melancholy, pungent with the aromas of nostalgia and heartache that a place I’ve come to love so dearly is in its final hours.

Germany, I dove into you head first, but not before my heart, which swooned at the sights before me: green and plush with potential abounding. I learned your native tongue and soon enough was kissing the air with sentences and conversations as though I were speaking only to you. I hiked through your mountains, lied in your valleys, indulged in your presence as though I finally entered the paradise lost ages ago.

I want to write you a love song, but I feel as though it’s too soon, as for now all I can manage to say is ‘thank you.’

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of experiencing the German life and culture with which I find myself endlessly fascinated. For gifting me with some of the most wonderful human beings I’ve ever come to know. For filling my heart all the times it felt empty and broken. Thank you for helping me learn to trust myself, proving to myself I am stronger and more confident than I give myself credit. Thank you for all the times you were my home when I felt as though I had none.

I was once told never to go to another country to find myself, that I already know myself enough to see life through another lens, and I have. Germany, you filled me with the idea of possibility and the beauty of wonder and the utmost optimism for the path of this world in which we live.

So as I finish packing my bags and ultimately depart, just know that my absence is only for the time being and that, with a little hard work and a heaping load of passion, I will one day return to satiate my enduring wanderlust. Aufwiedersehen, mein Schatz - goodbye, my treasure.

America, prepare yourself.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
