An Open Letter To My Roommates

As a new school year begins, I want to recount, remember, and acknowledge the small details about our Freshman year together.

An Open Letter To My Roommates

Dear Roomies,

I was the randomly picked one of the three of us. Neither of you knew me, and I did not know either you (except from all of the social media stalking I did in order to prep myself in meeting you ladies). You both grew up in Asian cultures and in strong Christian families while I did not. To be honest, none of us thought we’d be as close as we are now and I'm sure that we all thought we’d bump heads...a lot.

I could continue to list the things I was nervous about when I first moved in, but I’m not going to. I’m not going to list them because our differences don’t matter too much.

It’s our similarities, how we make each other smile and how we’ve grown together, that matters.

As you both know, I have written so many love letters that have not been sent or poems about unrequited love that have never been recited, but this will be my first ever published love letter; it’s to the both of you. We never thought we’d be able to cry in front of each other and since we have, here’s a letter to bring on some more tears!

Things I love and miss:

The way we hold hands when we walk.

Our giggles and wheezes as we crack stupid jokes and act ridiculous all over campus.

How we ALWAYS have each other’s backs.

How honest we are to each other.

How we’re not afraid to tell each other our crap or if we’re being dumb.

Our midnight burritos.

Our movie marathons.

Eating hot Cheetos.

Eating doughnuts.

When we get Boba from our local Boba place.

Looking for the Alaska Man (orange car).

How we’re all overprotective mama’s.

Making fun of the BU stereotypes.

Listening to “Sugar” and getting ready for the day.

Sharing my clothes with you.

Our funny nicknames for each other.

Taking hundreds of double chin selfies.

Going to Saver’s and scoring on some cute clothes.

Watching you guys eat.

When we would all be so lazy that we’d just watch movies and stay in bed all day.

The days we tried skipping class, but chickened out because we’re good students.

Our long talks and discussions.

Doing each other’s hair.

Joking about how we are a sorority.

Singing at the top of our lungs together.

Yelling at the stupid ducks and dogs that would wake us up in the mornings.

When we would take naps.

Getting coffee.

Walking to Walmart.

Painting our nails.

Our sassiness.

Our super legit boy-talk.

When we would all pile on top of my bed.

Our vlogs.

Now I’ll going to go more in depth about some things:

You two were there for me in so many difficult times in the past two semesters. Yes, other people were, but I want to specifically thank you for living with me through these times: through deaths, rejections, failures, and other hardships, you two were always with me, and not only because you lived with me.

You consoled me.

You held me.

You encouraged me.

You reminded me that I am a daughter of Christ.

You reminded me of my worth.

You told me I was beautiful every day.

You teased me to make me smile.

You made nasty double chin faces to make me smile.

You hugged me.

You told me that it was going to be okay a thousand times over when I didn’t think it was going to be okay.

You let me mourn and told me when I needed to take a break from being sad.

While I have so many happy memories about us telling each other jokes or doing something funny, the memory that sticks out to me the most is one from last semester:

It was when my heart had been crushed again and I didn’t think I could stop crying. You held me, mourned with me, stroked my hair, and let me know that everything would be fine until I fell asleep on your lap. I have never felt so loved and cared for. Thank you.

I have always had this epidemic of loving or caring for people more than they love/care for me. I am 100% safe to say that that does not apply to you. I love and care so much for both of you and you prove to me daily that you love and care for me.

I know we had a rough start, but thank you from the bottom of my heart for loving me and being some of the best roommates I could ever have. You both shine Christ so much. You are both so beautiful. You are both worth so much more than you’ll ever know.

One of the best parts about living with you two is being able to see your beauty everyday and waiting until the day that you can see it yourself.

With all of my love,

—One of the three Baemates

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
