An Open Letter To My People

My people,

I am writing to you guys to say thank you. We've only been friends for a couple of months but you guys have been my biggest supporters and encouragers. You guys have seen the tears and the melt-downs and have been there to pick me back up if I'm laughing it's probably because one of y'all made a joke or I remember something that happened (like someone falling down the stairs). When things have felt like they were crumbling you guys were there to tell me it's gonna be okay, encourage me, hug me and shove food in my mouth.

You guys are the people I couldn't imagine my life without, we haven't been friends super long but we've definitely had some good times the short time we've been friends. You are the ones who I could call at 2:00 a.m. if something was wrong but y'all are also the ones that I can celebrate with when good grades come or good news come. When I have decisions to make whether it be what coffee to order or what kind of fish I want to get or whatever it may be you guys are there to help me with those decisions.

Even though I fight with you guys about what's best all the time I know I should listen to y'all because in some cases you guys really do know best and are helping me out. You guys are the ones I can tell my crazy dreams and life goals to and you won't make fun of me no matter how ridiculous it might be. But you will push me higher and higher and believe in me even when I don't and I'm grateful for that. And theres nothing like jamming out to disney or Les Mis when we know we should be studying. I also wouldn't trade our car jam sessions and late nights talk for the world. And when I get moody or sassy you guys know whether to threaten me with sassy juice or just to leave me alone and let me lay on the floor. I am certain whether you live upstairs or across the world, you'd drop everything and be there if I needed you.

You guys are also are going to be honest whether I want you to be or not, whether it be about that guy I like I shouldn't or when I need to get my life together or if I'm just being plain dumb. You guys are the ones who would tickle me until I pee everywhere or make me laugh until I cry and I know no matter how much I need y'all, y'all need me too. So, a huge thanks to you guys for being my people. I love you guys so much!

You guys are my people, and you always will be my people.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
