An Open Letter To My One-Year Old Nephew

Dear Nephew,

Right now you are a little bit older than a year and you are growing up so fast. I remember holding you when you were only a few hours old and thinking about how I didn’t want to drop you because you were just a squishy little bundle. Now, you are running around, saying semi-full sentences, and stealing the hearts of everyone in our family. It is insane how one day you were a tiny little baby, sleeping in my arms as your mom and dad talked to my parents, and now you are asking me to get you cookies because mommy and daddy said no. For the record, I cannot always say yes to cookies because then I will get in trouble with mommy and daddy. In a blink of an eye, you have grown up and I want you to know a few things as you continue to grow; I hope this letter will convey the messages I am trying to tell you.

First, know that I love you and will always love you. I have loved you since the moment I knew your mommy was pregnant, and I have continued to love you. However, my love for you has only grown more and more over this past year and a half. With every new word you learn, every smile, every time you ask me for a cookie or Popsicle, I love you more. You are so loved, little munchkin. Our family consists of many people who care for you and love you, and they would do anything for you. Your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and God all love you so, so much. You are loved.

Also, know that you have the ability to melt anyone’s heart and make anyone’s day. You have always been a little ham, ever since you were delivered. Whenever I see you or whenever you ask me for a snack, you make my day. You make your mommy’s day when you call for her and you make your daddy’s day when you play with him. You constantly melt our hearts when you say “Thank you [insert silly nickname that we decided to teach you]” or “I love you” or when you grab a hold of someone’s hand or give them a hug or kiss. Those little actions and simple words melt all of our hearts and make our days.

Know that I am always here for you. You are my nephew and I love you so much. I will always be there for you. I will read with you, play with you and watch any and every Disney movie with you. I am always here for you.

Love Always,

Your Aunt

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
