An Open Letter To My Mom, A Mother Of 6

I have my mom to thank for that dream.

An Open Letter To My Mom, A Mother Of 6
Peggy Summe

As a 19-year-old sophomore pursuing a degree and still in her young years, I find myself constantly thinking of my future family life. Weird, right? I think of how many kids I want to have, maybe what they'll even look like and even their names.

Most people my age refuse to talk about the future, let alone their future family ideas and goals. When people ask me what I want to be when I grow up, I continue to tell them that I want a career in some field along the lines of marketing or communication work; but, in addition to that, I always tell them that I aspire to be a mom – hopefully with around five kids.

I have my mom to thank for that dream. I am a part of a huge family and I can't help but dream of having the same for myself when I'm older. Having kids of my own is a time of my life that I envision quite often, even though that lifestyle is decently far from where I am now. What my mom has shown to me and my other five siblings is a role that I admire and aspire to adopt.

So, here is a letter written to my mom, thanking her for shining the light of motherhood onto me at an early age:

Thank you for providing unconditional love and support for me, my sister and my four brothers. Not only do you make sure that we are doing exceedingly well, but you go above and beyond in order for our utmost success to happen. I can always count on you to be up in the stands cheering me on at my long swim meets or other sporting events, no matter the significance of the event, the distance away, the weather or the dragging hours.

Thank you for doing the little things: like baking cookies every day for us kids when we came off the bus, sending me care-packages of cookies to brighten my day or even taking pictures of me 24/7 (even though they are sometimes quite repulsive) so we have those memories to look back on.

Thank you for celebrating our birthdays like a new celebrity was just given an Oscar, and for getting us food like Skyline when we beg for it, even though you really don't like it. It's the sacrifices you make that we take for granted which shape us and help us grow into adults – something I'm becoming now.

Because of your strong personality, I have learned to not care what people think. Rather, I interpret thoughts that care most to me, and me only. I can't thank you enough for the constant communication you have created for my siblings and me to grow closer to one another.

You have shown me what it is like to be a mother and how when that time comes, your kids are your #1 priority and interest. Now, I may be biased, but you have shown me some of the best qualities a mother can present to her children.

What I admire most about you is your willingness to do anything for us, even though that may involve dropping everything you're doing to make that happen. Days like Mothers' Day aren't enough for people like you because you deserve thanks every day of every year.

So, thank you, Mom, for being my #1 fan and someone we can always count on. Without you, I wouldn't be where I am today.

Oh yeah, Dad, thank you, too. It's just the fact that I won't be a dad in the future, so this doesn't really apply.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
