An Open Letter To My Long Distance Best Friend

Whether we're 2 miles apart or 2,000 miles apart, thank you for showing me that distance doesn't have to affect a friendship.

Dear Best Friend,

Well here we are despite it all: the long distance, the new college experiences, and the new friends we've made. While this has been the ride of both of our lives I always still wish I could be there with you to experience all of the things that college has brought both of us. You've been my support system and person to lean on whenever I needed anything, and now you're thousands of miles away and that's still a weird thing for me to grasp. They always say that distance makes the heart grow fonder and I never knew that could be true until you and I both went our separate ways as we went off to school. From the first time we said our goodbyes with tears in our eyes, to reuniting and giving each other those 'I missed you so much' hugs, it's been a huge transition being away from you. But while we both have made that tough change, I just wanted to take this moment tell you how proud I am of you. To see you go off and experience this crazy adventure that we call college all by yourself, and how you've taken it by storm and made it your own never ceases to amaze me. It's still hard to grasp the idea that you're not here with me, and while I am having the time of my life away from you I just wanted to tell you what I miss the most about you. Now, I obviously can't list everything I miss about you cause God knows you'd be here all night reading this, so I'll just narrow my list down to the five things I miss most about you and I'll save the other infinite list for a later date.

1. Your sense of humor:

Yes I've had many laughs here at college but no amount of funny life moments will ever compare to the ones I've shared with you. From countless inside jokes, embarrassing moments, hilarious snapchats, funny texts, and an abundance of ridiculous stories, they've all been shared with you. You've seen me at best and my most embarrassing moments and you've stuck by my side regardless. You have helped me look back and laugh at every good and bad moment that has occurred in my life and for that I am truly grateful. Thank you for always laughing at all my bad jokes, making my day with a funny text or an embarrassing story from the nigh before, or God awful, but funny, pictures of random and questionable moments from high school. But most importantly, thank you for reminding me never to take life too seriously and for making me laugh whether we're together or hundreds of miles apart.

2. Your constant support:

You were my back bone when I was too afraid to use my own, my voice when I didn't know what to say, and my mom when I needed one most. You always pushed me to be the best version of myself that I could be and you never let me settle for anything less. Any negative comment I ever said about myself was always met with 10 positive comments about myself from you. You saw things in me that I never saw in myself and you consistently tried to bring those out of me. The way you were always my biggest fan and supporter whether it be to see how many tacos I could eat in one sitting, to see every single game I played in, and for every test I was about to take; you were always there cheering me on and helping me up when I would fall.

3. Your loyalty:

No matter where, when, or what time it was you were always there for me. Whether it was to hear me rant about a long day or any problems I was having, you never hesitated to be by my side to help me through whatever it was that I was going through. You were always my right hand and someone who was always by my side no matter what the situation. Even now I know I can always reach out to you about anything and everything, and there is nothing more comforting than knowing that anytime I need you, you'll always answer any text, call, or Snapchat that I'll send your way.

4. Your honesty:

We've had our ups and downs and have agreed and disagreed on a few things throughout our friendship, but no matter what, at the end of the day you were always the person who would give it to me straight. There's never any sugar coating with us. It doesn't matter if it's about a questionable outfit choice, a guy, a place we want to go to, something that one of us said, or something that we want to do, you're always honest about anything and everything and you never fail to give me the best advice on what I should do about it.

5. Your true originality:

You are such a one in a million person and it has always inspired/amazed me ever since the day I first met you. With the way that you carried yourself, and pushed yourself, and went through life with such confidence and energy, there was nothing more inspiring than that and there was no one who I wanted to be more than you. You are such a unique and one of a kind person who's never afraid to be herself and stand out from the crowd, and everyone knows who you are because of that. Instead of walking you run, instead of coloring inside the lines you paint your own masterpiece, and instead of going an inch you go 10 miles. You're never afraid of doing whatever it is that you want to do and you don't care what other people think about that; that's one thing that still inspires me about you to this day.

There obviously are not enough words that I can put together that will ever be able to describe how much you mean to me, and while going to different schools was hard for both of us, because of you you've made that transition so much easier for me. Because of you I have become someone who I never thought I would be; someone who's outgoing, confident, and not afraid to get out of their comfort zone. I owe a great deal of who I am today to you. You inspired me every single day to make the world my oyster and you showed me that life's too short to think "what if." You were and still are, someone who I always aspire to be, and you helped me grow into the person I am now. I don't think I could ever thank you enough for always being my rock, my backbone, my support system, my sister, and for being the person who I never knew I needed. Whether we're 2 miles apart or 2,000 miles apart, thank you for continuously showing me that distance doesn't have to affect a friendship.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
