Hi boss,
It’s me, your employee who works really hard, follows all the rules and rarely asks for personal things.
It has come to my attention that you have forgotten what being a part-time employee entails. Besides not receiving any benefits, part-time employees enjoy the wonders of not having to work 30 or more hour work weeks if they do not choose to as well as less responsibility to keep the well-oiled engine of a job running.
That being said, I would like to ask why it is such a big deal to request off certain days for an extended period of time. I will not apologize for the fact that I am not completely tied to the company through a contract like you and many of the full-time employees are. I just don’t have that type of love for this job. If you don’t have enough people to cover days when someone goes on a trip, maybe you should hire an extra person or two?
I also feel like I should bring to light the fact that I am a college student who does intend to make a career out of waiting on pompous guests who believe that bullying the staffers of an institution is the best version of a good time. Shocker - I know.
With that being said, maybe it’s just me being an entitled millennial or maybe it’s me understanding the benefits of staying part-time, I have no remorseful feelings in taking multiple days off from work multiple times a year. I give enough of my time, energy and will away to make sure I’m passing my classes and excelling with my major, internship and other activities that will actually benefit me in the future to try to become employee of the month at a place I work in only to pay my bills.
I’m sorry if it aggravates you that I am not like my 30 and near 40-year-old coworkers who seem to genuinely care about the place we work. If I were a college graduate who still lived near my old college apartment and gave up on looking for jobs within my major field, I would care about one of the only places that hired me at this point, as well. Especially if that place also happened to be filled with the only people I seem to spend my time with in and outside of work. I’m not saying that to be petty either because it’s true.
While you might have some grievances with my requested time off, I also have my own grievances about your work ethic. An employer should never yell at one of their employees in front of guests and especially in front of other employees. Not only does it should how uncaring a manager you are but also shows how little respect you give to those who work for you. Ending every command with “Because I am in charge,” also does not win you brownie points in the game of best places to work. Talking down on your charges like they are all 12 and you are 55 doesn’t help your case either. The list goes on and on with all the things I dislike while being under your supervision.
What peeves me the most, though, is how no one addresses the fact that our establishment has such a high turn over rate for employees. I don’t care if it’s just something that happens in our line of business; it speaks wonders about how those employees are being treated. Maybe it’s time to stop being a tyrant and actually treat everyone who works with us with a bit of dignity.
From,
Your tired assistant (read: not slave).
