Dear mom,

Your love is the most wonderful thing in the world. It is the rock that shelters me during the storm, the hug that comforts me on a bad day, and the gentle hand that pushes me forward in life. I don’t know if I could ever love anyone as much as I love you.

In these past 20 years of life I have seen you go through so much, and grow to be someone I am truly humbled to be related to. In those 20 years I have seen you work a Hodge podge of jobs, raise three kids, and still find time to cook and clean after working a 12 hour shift. I have seen you move to a new country with nothing but your name to bare in order to ensure a better life for us. I have seen you come home crying from the jobs that you could not stand. But day in and day out you always had a smile on your face, and you never once let me feel as if I wasn't living the best life imaginable. There was not a single day where I did not feel loved.

Today you still work just as hard, pulling forty hours a week minimum. I see the strain it takes on you, how tired you aging body has become. I want to smile and tell you that everything is going to turn out fine, that you will be able to retire on time, that you can live by the beach like you have always dreamed. You only smile and laugh in skepticism every time I do. You have taken care of me all my life, and all I want to do is be able to take care of you for a change.

Everything I do, I do for you. You are the thought that comes into my mind when I want to just give up studying, or when I consider writing a last minute paper. The thought of disappointing you is what pushes me to be better than I ever thought I could be. I can’t stand the thought of causing you to be sad. Although my words and actions might not always portray this I love you with all my heart. I would do anything to make you smile and laugh. You are the kindest, most earnest, and smartest person I know. You never cease to amaze me. You have shown me how to be strong, how to turn the other cheek, and how to show kindness to everyone.

You have taught me so much, and no matter how old I get you will always have more to teach. You have shown me that anything is possible, that anything can be done. You are the greatest role model any daughter could ever wish for, and I work hard every day to make you as proud of me as I am of you. So sit down, relax, smile, and know that you are loved, and that I would give you the world if I could.

Love,

Your admiring daughter

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
