An Open Letter To My Friends Going Abroad

Dear friend (that is so selfishly leaving me for a term),

I want our last few days together to be a time of celebration and endless laughter — I do not want to say goodbye. Yet, the inevitable goodbye is approaching and I need you to hear everything I have to say. So, here's my goodbye.

Your future, unimaginably open to you, is ready to be traveled. Through those travels, know that somewhere, walking the sidewalks of Schenectady or sitting in a classroom at Union, is a girl who misses you, thinks about you, shares memories with you and is always here for you as you head on new paths.

Spending a term away from everything you've ever known is going to be hard, but I hope that knowing I'll always be here makes it a little easier. I am still in denial of the fact that I am going to be so far from you for such an extended period of time. It’s the little things I’ll miss like dragging my limp, hungover body to your bed in the morning, walking by your spot in the library for a quick hug, texting you my awkward encounters in the dining hall and knowing you're just a short walk away at all times. I hope you find as much comfort and happiness in our memories as I do.

I cannot wait to hear about the big things, such as all the great friends you make (I'm still better, though) all of the unforgettable experiences you have, as well as the little things, such as your favorite foreign meals and chic outfits you buy. I may not be able to respond as quickly or answer while you’re awake, but remember that I care about you and the events of your exciting lives abroad to an infinite degree.

For now, we are going to live our lives the best we can, exploring opportunities and having new experiences, while being there for each other every step of the way. That’s what I love about us: We never, ever want to hold each other back. We just travel down our new paths, knowing that no matter how far we apart we are, we will still always have our friendship; we will still always be one phone call away. As sad as it is to be apart, we must always find solace in knowing that we will have each other.

When it comes down to it, I’m your best friend and you are mine. You are whom I vent to, you are whom I confide in, you are whom I look up to. You give me guidance and comfort, you are the person I tell everything about my day to and I always want to hear about yours. Whether I’m snuggling in your bed or Skyping you from across the world, my love for what we have will never, ever change.

Have fun, but be careful! Do not get F.O.M.O. for even a second. You are going to have the experience of a lifetime and America, and I, will be waiting right here for you when you return.

Goodbye See you later,

Your less-cultured best friend

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
