An Open Letter To My Fellow Americans

I am so sorry.

An Open Letter To My Fellow Americans
Me and Folly

Dear America, I am so sorry.

It has been years since we've had an election this earth-shattering. Fortunately, the last president we had was groundbreaking, but the man our country just elected into office is heartbreaking. So to my fellow American citizens, whoever you voted for, I apologize.

To my fellow Americans who voted for Trump,

Somewhere along the line, I know that either this man spoke words that you felt expressed your truest beliefs, or this woman frightened you enough to lead you to vote for Donald Trump. No matter what, we have all been failed and hurt by this election. We have all slung insults, we have all argued and we as a society have seemingly split. I am so sorry, my Trump-supporting friends, that you were blinded enough to have voted for a man that has insulted 70 percent of the population. I am so sorry, but for four years I plan to fight the damage you have created. I am so sorry that in December, if you defend a man that’s up on the bench because he allegedly raped a 13 year old, you will have proven to be the most heartless group of voters on the planet. I’m sorry that between corruption and destruction of the moral fiber of our nation, you chose destruction.

To my fellow sexual assault victims and survivors,

We will make it through this. We will defy the man who condones sexual assault, and we will push through whatever Supreme Court judge he chooses to nominate. I am deeply apologetic that almost half of the nation condones sexual assault. We are not invalidated by his words, rather, let's be inspired to stand up against these tribulations. We are stronger than mere threats and we will fight back.

To my fellow feminists,

Now is the time. If they thought she was a nasty woman, wait until they see us work. This presidency is going to bring forward the most intelligent, strong and powerful generation of women yet.

To my LGBTQ+ family,

I just have no words for how heavily this hurts the community as a whole. With a vice president who believes in conversion therapy for homosexuals and a president ready to roll back protection laws, there is no telling what is to come. My transgendered friends should not have to live in fear, nor should anyone else. I am so sorry that half of the country failed you. We all deserve better than this.

To our sisters, mothers and daughters,

Women are of more value than you could imagine. Now, more than ever, women are equated to the powerful beautiful beings they are. We can do anything, despite being told that a man will be more qualified. I’m so sorry that our country fails to see us as the true force that we are.

To my Hispanic, Latino or Muslim neighbors and friends,

I will do anything in my power to protect you. You are just as worthy of this country as anyone else, and anyone who dares to try to make you leave or fear for your life is not worth anyone’s time. I have no words for the hateful rhetoric Trump perpetuates against you all, but I truly am sorry.

To those of you that did not vote,

Though we had some rough candidates, there was a safer choice for our community and society. If you are unhappy with the product of this election, please remember that four years ago, Hillary was just a few thousand votes for taking it. It is our responsibility – not only as Americans but as human beings – to spread love now more than ever. Love has won repeatedly, and though it may seem dismal now, love will prevail again.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
