When move-in day rolled around I thought to myself, as I'm sure many college kids have, "Who am I going to be living next to this year?" Little did I know that those random strangers would soon become some of my best friends.
The people on my floor are the ones that see me at my worst when I'm fresh out of bed in the morning looking extremely repulsive, they're the ones that have seen me sneak in...or out... a "friend" at all hours of the night. But, most importantly, they're my go-to's. When I want to grab something to eat, or simply just talk about a problem that might be bothering me, I can go knocking on my neighbors' doors and simply ask. I love my floor-mates like family; that being said, here are five small messages to simply keep in mind:
1. To the boys who live next door, I understand that there are walls between our rooms, but this, unfortunately, does not mean the walls are sound-proof.
I fully support your exciting nights full of "rocking the bed," but if I can't hear myself think over your partner's overjoyed need to express how they're feeling, maybe just give me a heads up so I know to make sure I get headphones... big noise canceling headphones. But don't worry. I'll only give you the "I know what you did last night" look a couple of times...
2. To the ones who think it's okay to put clothes in the dryer that aren't theirs, stop.
In the beginning, I fully appreciated the attempt and thought it was nice of someone to do that for me. Little did I know there was no sentimental value to this, as they simply wanted to take care of themselves. I now have four shirts and sweaters that most likely fit a small child, but even then, they might be a little tight. I promise I will come do my laundry. Please just let me do it. But, I still appreciate you as a person.
3. To the ones who knock on my door at 3 a.m. and want to go on a food run, I will always grab my coat and go, so please don't be afraid to ask.
I know it may seem a bit ridiculous to do such a thing, but I understand. I understand that sometimes food will just fill that void that we may need. Plus, if I'm already up (which I probably will be) I'll most likely hear you shuffling around the hallway at 3 a.m. and be nosey and see what you're doing anyway.
4. To the girls on my floor who I can tell anything to, thank you.
I know if I'm having a rough day and I just need someone I can cry too, I can walk down the hallway and you'll have my back no matter what. Thank you for being my lunch dates, my Saturday nights, and my Sunday mornings when we get breakfast. I look forward to opening my door after a night of partying and seeing you guys at the other end just as out of it as I am and just laughing with me.
5. To the guys on my floor who have become like my brothers, I appreciate you guys just as much.
Even though I have my girls, I may sometimes want a guy's advice on how guys think, and though you're crazy 99 percent of the time, you always put it aside and have a serious conversation with me. And you're honest... but sometimes, I really do just need the crazy environment full of laughter, and I know you'll equally provide that as well.
So, to my floor-mates, I overall just want to thank you. Thank you for becoming like family to me and for being some of my greatest friends to have throughout college. I will always cherish our memories and I will always look forward to a new experience every time I open my door!
