An Open Letter To My Authentic Friends

Why authenticity is so important.

Authenticity.

In a world filled with self-doubt, insecurities, expectations and judgement, authenticity is hard to come by. Too many people blatantly judge others for differences not accepted by current society standards. It is pressures like these that harness and suppress the wonders of so many individuals. It takes expression, halts it, and then throws it under the rug.

Finding individuals who are whole heartedly themselves is a rarity. Witnessing the unfiltered thoughts pour out of their minds is so inspiring. It is one occurrence I find most beautiful in our ever-evolving world.

Beyond authenticity is accepting others for their authentic selves. As people, we experience every event differently. We are continuously shaped by these events, as each occurrence tends to ignite a change in perspective or a change in the way we carry ourselves. This myopic view of the world is many times projected onto others when it comes to their viewpoint. Sadly, it means we expect others to react to situations just as we would. We expect them to be us; and we judge them for this difference. We refuse to accept them for who they are because who they are doesn’t fit in with our own perspectives. But there is always a bold soul who takes people as they are. Instead of judging and comparing others' decisions to their own, they accept others for their authentic selves.

These people make others feel that they are able to open up freely, and this is when that authentic expression really occurs. I am so thankful to the individuals who have witnessed me at every emotion and continue to accept me and my path. Hold on to those friends that put the effort in to make you feel this way. They are truly hard to come by.

This article is dedicated to Will Lange. You came into my life in a time of chaos and unhealthy self-discovery, and continued to put a smile on my face with your care-free and lovable attitude. Although we were never close, those car rides home blasting electric music were a blessing. You truly made such a positive and lasting effect on me. I will miss you, you beautiful, authentic soul.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
