An Open Letter to Kaitlin Bennett

You were not and will not be welcome in Pittsburgh.

An Open Letter to Kaitlin Bennett

Dear Kaitlin,

You became infamous for being the "Kent State gun girl" who unapologetically advocates for gun rights, especially on school campuses. Your argument was that "we should be able to protect ourselves against a tyrannical government." Rather than offering condolences or even just staying silent in response to mass shootings, you ridiculed victims. David Hogg, a Parkland shooting survivor, was even mocked by you. Throughout all of this, I kept my social media presence regarding you to a minimum, as I did not want to give you the attention you so desperately crave. I refuse to stay silent anymore.

In January, you announced that you would be protesting outside of Mayor Peduto's office in Pittsburgh. (Classy move calling him "Mayor Potatohead", by the way.) The Pittsburgh City Council had introduced three gun restriction bills in the previous month, and you thought it was appropriate to show up in Pittsburgh with an AR-15 rifle. I have just a few questions for you:

Are you aware that less than three months ago 11 people were killed in a shooting in Pittsburgh?

Do you know that 7 people were injured in Shabbat services?

Did it cross your mind that it might not be a good idea to casually sport a gun around this city while we are still trying to heal?

The Tree of Life Synagogue has not been in use since that day in October. The people who once thought of it as their safe space have resorted to finding new places of worship throughout the city. Half of the building is blocked off and it is surrounded by flowers and messages of hope. We, as individuals and as a city, are trying to recover. We are rebuilding after having been drowned in sorrow and terror. Community is now important to many of us more than ever, and we do not intend for you to be a part of it.

If you want praise to boost your superiority complex, go to another city.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
