An Open Letter To Junior Year

Because sooner rather than later we're going to be seniors.

Dear Junior Year,

We had a lot of fun, didn’t we? There was a lot of ups and downs, but what a great year. So many memories, with people that mean so much to you.

School wise, you just about wanted to kill yourself. Taking mostly 300 and 200 level classes, we still haven’t been able to get the homework and studying rhythm down yet. We still spent countless hours in the library trying to figure out why we decided to leave this assignment to the last possible moment.

We should have known that all professors assign assignments around the same day and don't care that we have other classes to study for. So now, you have three papers, two tests, and a lot of homework to do, all within the same week. But, coffee, chocolate, and the encouragement that if you finish now, you can go drink later, got us through it.

Not to mention, we turned 21 this year! How amazing was that? No more worrying about getting ID-ed at the liquor store or at the bar that you always go to. The weight of the world was lifted from your shoulders and without that weight you definitely went out more because of it. It’s too bad that not all your friends have turned 21 yet, but soon enough they’ll be right by your side and that’ll be the wildest night ever.

Not to mention, you’ve known these people for three years! That’s a long time, most marriages don’t even last that long! That’s an accomplishment if there ever was one.

You know these people so well; you know when they're upset because they didn’t get a text back from their crush when they’re stressed out about classes, or when they really just need a night out and take 10 shots and sing at the top of their lungs.

These are the people that you are going to take into your adult world and you couldn’t be happier about meeting them and experiencing so many things.

But speaking of the adult world….that’s after this summer. Most of us have internships and wow, where has the time gone? Who would have thought that we made it this far? This summer will most likely be the last summer spending time with our friends and goofing off.

Doing everything, from hiking, driving to Canada (cause why not?), to drinking every day (cause why not?). But when we get back to school in August, we’re going to be seniors and sooner then we want, we’ll be on winter break, and then we’ll be graduating. I don’t know about the other juniors but just thinking about that makes me want to get under my bed covers and stay there forever…

But when the time comes, we’ll be ready. We’ll have the best memories, the best people, and the best prospect for the future. There’s nothing I would want to change about junior year (expect maybe more sleep and better food).

So as the final weeks of junior year approach, let’s just remember what an amazing year we had and the amazing summer we’re going to have.

From,

Current Junior Student

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
