There once was a time was a time when you were just a friend, just someone I saw every day at school, just someone I hung out with on the weekends. As the years have gone by, just “hanging out on the weekends” became something more.
We became closer; I knew everything about you, and you knew everything about me. We began to finish each other's sentences. We became each other's Valentine’s Day dates. Our extracurricular activities became our extra hang out days. We began sharing everything, especially our clothes and makeup. We planned to go to our summer camps and stay in the same dorm together. We have spent days upon days just strapped together. Our parents are friends. They have been friends from the start. That brought us closer. You soon learned to walk right in my door, as did I, no questions asked because you’re always welcome. Just come over for dinner, to watch movies, whatever; there was no invite needed. We buy the huge pizzas, get our favorite chips and ice cream, then crawl up on your bed to watch a mushy-gushy love story and eat away our feelings. We spend a lot of our time together.
I can’t count how many pictures we have taken together, from the pictures of us smiling as children, to our planned photo-shoots where we put way too much makeup on and made our outfits match to perfection. Every holiday that we give each other gifts, they were thoughtful. Many of those pictures bring back the good memories.
We talk every time we can. Months could go by without a text or call, but the next time we see each other, it’s like no time has passed.
As 10+ years go by, we go to our family events together: weddings, jewelry parties, baby showers, dinners, whatever it is.You’re there for everything. My ups, and my downs. My family’s ups, my family’s downs. Soon, I was calling you my sister. You have passed the friend stage.
My mom calls you her daughter. I call your mom, my mother. My cousins call you their cousins. They want to know when you’ll be over again so we can plan our next hang out. We plan trips together. We take more pictures to add the collection, adding many more memories to the bank to store when we have days without each other.
To my long-lost sister: you’re stuck with me. You are my forever friend, lover, and family. We have those days apart, but know I’m always in your heart. As we grow older and times may separate us, never forget the memories we share and the times we will share in the future. Whenever you’re down, return to them. Just don’t be a grump during Black Friday shopping this year.
