This is a letter to everyone who at one point has shamed anyone of the millennial generation for using technology. We get it, you think Instagram is ruining the world.
First of all, you are not the first one to tell us this. We've heard this all before. We know that you think our technology usage is a problem, but there's a couple things you have twisted.
You claim that we can't put our phones down for two seconds, but there are plenty of times that I've gone days or weeks without my phone. And surprisingly, no, I did not have the mental breakdown that you so kindly predicted for me. Not to mention, you usually bring this point up when we're glancing at our phone or responding to a quick text message. You don't even know what we're doing when you yell at us, you just see us looking at a screen and pounce. I know this is shocking, but we have responsibilities too! There are urgent emails and text messages that we have to respond to. Just because we're young doesn't mean that every time we're grabbing our phones we're playing a dumb phone game.
Which brings me to my next point - What makes you think that scolding us for using our phones will get us to stop? When has that ever worked? In fact, most of the time it's comments like those that cause us to retreat back to our phones just to distance ourselves from the negative reaction. Just a quick tip for you -- try using a more convincing method. Besides, older generations have been mad at younger generations since the beginning of time. But did your life get ruined by listening to rock 'n' roll music? No.
I agree, there are plenty of times when I have gotten frustrated with a friend for pulling out his or her phone when we were together, but it's a habit that your generation is beginning to develop as well. As much as we hate to admit it, we're all becoming increasingly dependent on our phones. However when you do it, you're celebrated as "tech savvy" -- while we're shamed as "obsessed."
You claim that we're the least social of all the generations because we're just staring at our screens, which is incredibly insulting. In what universe does me texting a friend signify that I am incapable of engaging in a conversation with another person? We would literally be unable to function in society if your statement was even a little bit true.
While we're on the subject of statements that have no factual evidence, your jokes about us not knowing how to turn on a physical book are not funny. We've all held a book in our hands no matter how many tablets, phones or computers we may own. We Google things because it's faster than looking it up in a dictionary, not because we're stumped by how to do it.
And your claim that we only post things to get likes? Also not true. Sure, it feels great to get a high number of responses on a post, but did you ever think that maybe we post things to share about our experiences with our friends and family who are across the country? Or that Instagram posts make it easy to re-live those awesome moments we had?
Excuse me while I go on a quick tangent, but who told you that anyone gets judged for how many Facebook friends they have? Every crappy tween movie plot talks about how lame someone is because they only have 50 Facebook friends. You guys made that up. That never happened.
Alright, I think we've made our point. Please stop making young people out to be inconsiderate airheads when you just don't understand what we're doing.
Also, please fix the economy. K, thanks.
