For a couple of years, my family and I attended my grandpa’s annual Assyrian commemoration ceremony for those who lost their lives serving in the armed forces. Frankly, I was too young to appreciate the ultimate sacrifice of those fighting our nation’s necessary battles. Many times, I detested the commemoration ceremony because of the scorching weather, congested crowds and other emerging priorities on my mind. Reflecting back on it now, I am disappointed for neglecting the beauty of the countless families who continuously attended the ceremony, the unmistakable veil of our nation’s colors proudly worn by each citizen, the unforgettable sound of bagpipers whose notes effortlessly produced an overwhelming sense of humility, the certain rush of goose bumps during the solemn Changing of the Guard, or the ultimate sensation of American pride experienced through a patriotic salute to our beautiful nation. I am forever grateful for my grandpa’s service to our country and the countless men and women dedicated to continuing the necessary fight. We will never forget our fallen heroes.

I hope to revitalize the spirit of Memorial Day. For too many years, individuals overlook this sacred time in which we commemorate the countless lives of American soldiers, men and women alike, who lost their lives in service to our country. Unfortunately, Memorial Day carries little weight in the minds of numerous Americans today. I feel this is a dishonor to each individual who sacrificed their life to establish a more independent and prosperous nation. Although the safety and fate of America lies in the balance during the next several years due to terrorist threats, economic downfall, and political corruption, the United States would not exist without the fearless sacrifice of our men and women in the armed forces. Memorial Day is a time for genuine remembrance of those who believed the future of our nation preceded their own personal problems. They truly viewed America as a land of opportunity for their family and fought for the rights and dignity of every neighboring citizen. I encourage every American to recall the heroic actions of our departed brothers and sisters and allow Memorial Day to truly open your hearts in gratitude for the sacrifice of our fallen heroes.

Every person endures their own battle. Each day is a personal test of emotions against the persistent flood of priorities. We find ourselves losing control over the little things in life despite our steadfast efforts. Time always manages to prolong our short-tempers while triggering an unyielding sense of indignation. As humans, we gradually develop an unhealthy temperament when our foremost responsibilities are neglected. Nevertheless, we must take a step back from our consuming schedules to commemorate each individual who selflessly dedicated themselves to preserving the safety, integrity and prosperity of this great nation.

My fellow Americans, here’s to our departed men and women who valiantly fought the most meaningful battles. Here’s to all those in our armed forces that took a bullet for their neighbor, without any fear in their hearts. Here’s to every individual that woke up each day to stare violence, injustice and death in the eye with an American flag in their own. I will forever hold your devotion and tireless efforts for preserving the rights and dignity of every American in my heart. God bless your service to our beautiful nation, and God bless the United States of America.

America is the land of the free because of the brave. Take a moment to remember who got us here.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
