Since the 1940’s, slinkies have become, at one point or another, a prized possession for kids all over the world to have. Just watching them deform and reform as it goes down the stair has always been truly mesmerizing. Go look up a Slinky YouTube video and I’ll assure you, you most likely watched all the way until the end. It has even been featured in a FUTURAMA episode where it famously goes down a stack of books and suddenly bursts in flames. Slinkies won’t actually do this themselves unless of course you find a way to make them to (don’t try that at home; I do not condone this!)
By any means, I want to talk about the Pros and Cons of having Slinkies. Like with everything in life: it is not all just fun and games and here is why.
Pros:
- You’ll get to do all of the cool tricks you see in commercials like having the slinky go down a stack of boxes, papers, and even go down the stairs. You can also feel the cool weight shift when you hold both ends of the slinkies with your palms facing up and move your hands in the opposite vertical direction.
- You can make a collection of different color slinkies and types (metal or plastic.) This will make you look like an ultimate pro for sure and your friends will definitely find something to do with all of those slinkies.
- The best Pro of all arguably is that you get to say that you have a slinky. Of course, anyone can just lie about it and excuse themselves by saying, “Oh, I left it at home,” “It’s somewhere in my room, I just can’t find it,” or some other lie but be sure that if you DO indeed have a slinky, have it somewhere you can show it off to your friends (who hopefully have low expectations of what is cool in a ‘that’s so old- cool’ sort of way.)
Cons:
- If you’re too rough or careless with your slinky however, it will develop an awkward bump and the slinky will no longer hold a perfect circle all the way around the ridges. It could also develop a split that won’t close. Originally the slinky will have all of it’s circular rings one on top of the other but a circle section will be partially off of this ring.
- You could also make it so that your slinky makes an infinity sign and make it have other loops but you run the risk of spending strenuous time trying to put the slinky back to normal and it will cause the problems in point #1.
- If by any chance, the slinky rubs up against your skin, it might and or it will pinch you... and it will hurt. It will grab on to the little hairs that you don’t notice on the surface of your skin and it will pull it. I am warning you now.
All in all, buy yourself a slinky but take care of it!
