So what's anime? If you haven't heard of it... good. Run away because it's garbage. If you don't like heeding life-saving advice, continue reading.
Anime is Japanese animation. There are animated shows/movies about almost anything. There are shows out there if you like adventure, romance, day to day life, episodic, drama, comedy... almost anything. Since they're from Japan, they're in Japanese, so they have subtitles in almost any language.
So why should I put on hold "real life" shows to watch cartoons? Because watching the same 7 episodes of "SVU" and "Grey's Anatomy" gets real boring, real fast. On top of that, each episode is only 20 minutes! 20 minutes! That's how long it takes me to get ready in the morning. Do I watch anime? I only got into it recently and I started wondering... Why don't I share this with the masses?
So here's a good guide begin watching anime.

What's the logic behind my subsets? Well, beginners are for people who have never watched anime. The shows are in English, they're dubbed well, the plot line is easy to follow, and they're simply good.
Intermediate means you have some shows under your belt, you can stand to watch something not in English, and you're starting to pick up on some anime tropes and humor.
Veterans are for shows that have complex plot lines and/or they require some knowledge of anime tropes/humor as a whole to fully appreciate the show.
