The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare.
Cassandra Clare’s successful series, The Mortal Instruments, affected many readers like me. Her series ended up being my favorite. Here is why.
If you read the series, Mortal Instruments, and haven’t fallen in love with Jace Wayland, the main character, then you must be crazy. Jace is described to be this ominous shadow hunter who is tough and clever. Jace is fearless as he isn’t afraid to take on any demon or even his own relatives. Jace is also described to be perfect looking. Who wouldn’t fall in love with that? He’s the full package.
Another powerful character in her novel is Clary Fray. Clary is tough and artistic. Her artistic skills and intuition seriously help her throughout the whole series. Without her gift of art, she would not have made it, as it helped her become a crucial character in the novel. Clary’s fiery personality and bravery contribute to Jace and Clary’s success.
Simon Lewis was described as a nerdy boy who loved video games….at first. Then his nerdy side was quickly taken from him when he helped Clary and Jace on their shadow hunter mission. Simon evolved from a nerd to a tough nerd. After becoming a vampire, he remained faithful to Jace and Clary, even when he despised Jace. He eventually became a significant character and truly contributed to their success in the novel.
I would say that Clary and Jace were "goals." There were many plot twists in the novel. Jace and Clary’s love for each other was powerful, lying and it kept their motivation to kill their father going. Jace’s impulsive personality balanced Clary’s intelligent/cautious personality. Jace and Clary were each other into their yang. The best Clary+Jace scene happed in The City of Bones, which was the first book in the series. Jace took Clary up to the roof and there they shared a picnic and a first kiss. As I’ve only gotten up to book 3 so far, I would say that one of the main reasons that keeps me reading is my curiosity to see if they end up together. They’ve been through so much together, I would be truly disappointed if they don’t end up together.
Simon and Clary’s friendship, in my opinion, was also "goals." They were able to conquer many shadow hunter missions together. Simon remained honest and loyal to Clary, even when he really didn’t want to. He stood by her side, and really was one of the only people who truly knew her. Although they dated, they were able to put aside the awkwardness and still remain best friends. Simon was able to hide his love for her, and care for her like a best friend. Even though Simon genuinely hated Jace because Clary loved him, at first, he still fought through his hatred to make Clary happy. The best Simon + Clary scene happened in book 3. Clary had just found out that her mother just returned from the hospital after being ‘asleep’ for a long time. Clary was angry at her mother for not telling her anything about her real life, and especially about Jace. Clary ran off, and for hours nobody could find her; however, Simon was the one who knew exactly where to go to find her. He brought her a jacket and they talked until she as okay.
