An Adventure A Year

They say that life is a journey, but what is the point of going on a journey if there is no adventure? I’m one of those people who always has to be doing something. I need to have plans. I need to have a project. I need to have something to look forward to.

I’ve realized that I crave to do big things and create amazing memories. This is what I came up with:

I’ve realized that for the past 4 years in a row, I have done something adventurous each year, something that I didn’t have to do or I wasn’t expected to do.

2013- Received a lead role of the Sour Kangaroo in Seussical.

2014- Received the lead role of Miss Hannigan in Annie.

2015-Embarked on a mission’s trip to Mexico.

2016- Marched drum corps.

I look back at these moments and realize these are the events I consider to be the highlights of my life. This both satisfies me and terrifies me at the same time. On one hand, these adventures were amazing, each one a little bigger than the next. On the other hand, I am constantly thinking to myself I can’t let this be it. I need more adventure.

I came back from drum corps this summer, all tan, skinny, and filled with so much confidence. But the first thing I thought after waking up in my own bed the next morning was what will my next adventure be?

After posting the same question on Facebook and twitter, my mom said, “Honey, you just were away from home for 70 days! Can you take a break?”

I realized I can’t take a break. I had to start thinking about my next adventure. I had to begin planning. That’s when I took a step back and looked at everything that I had accomplished over the last several years. Pretty big adventures for someone who isn’t even 20 yet.

A thought came to my mind: An adventure a year…

This is my goal and I believe that we should all keep this in our minds. Begin planning an adventure and do one every single year. It could be a big adventure that involves passports, other countries, and airplanes. Or it could be an adventure in your own personal life such as writing a novel, reading 100 books in one year, or conquering a fear. Give into your wanderlust. Become a philanthropist. Do something.

You can’t wait around for an adventurous life to come to you; that isn’t the way adventure works.

I have realized recently that living boldly is rewarding. I have learned so much about myself over these past few years because of my experiences. Confidence. Positivity. Creativity.

For those of you who crave something more, let’s start with an adventure a year. Let’s make adventure a habit in our lives.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
