This past weekend, Amy Schumer hosted "Saturday Night Live" and jabbed the Kardashian family during her opening monologue. Someone asked Amy, “Is it an exciting time for women in Hollywood?” What followed was her hilarious, spot-on jokes about how young girls need better role models. Amy said, “We have to be a role model for these little girls, because who do they have? All they have, literally, is the Kardashians. A whole family who take the faces they were born with as a light suggestion?” She continues to criticize Khloe for her loss weight, saying she “lost a Kendall.” Her claim is that we no longer have Khloe to identify with as the heavier, more realistic sister.
Khloe fired back on Twitter saying, “No need to tear down others just to make urself feel bigger. It actually makes you quite small. I’m on a healthy journey. I don’t care 4 the hate.” Then added, “Let’s uplift one another! Happy Sunday! Stay smiling!”
Women in the media should not be against each other. They should be celebrating one another! As feminists we have to support fellow women in our fields and not prove others wrong by tearing them down. My hope is for the feminist community to become stronger, especially in media, i field I hope to pursue.
Amy has since apologized. Her job is supposed to make fun of others in a harmless funny way, I mean she mostly makes fun of herself! Was it necessary for her to apologize, considering how many people are attacked by comedians daily? To play devils advocate -- is Amy a good role model for young girls if she is constantly taking down others and herself as well?
