With every great work, thought and or performance, there will always be critics, snide remarks, and rebuttals but plagiarism? So, I know that by now everyone has heard and seen Donald Glover's, This is America as well as Jase Harley's, American Pharaoh if you have not, please listen before reading. Now it is important to discuss these two songs where one artist is accused of plagiarism; it is very important to discuss the allegations regarding this controversial music as they call it. Before I move forward, let's discuss the word plagiarism. In my own words and the world, plagiarism is defined as the taking of someone's work certainly identical and taking ownership over it. So, it is basically falsely claiming someone's work. Please tell me where or the important thing, how is Glover's present work the exact beat, words and or thoughts? As we know, every artist, writer, actor, performer, etc. when we present something it is intended for an audience.
We know that any presentation or performance has a purpose for an intended message.
To understand fully in depth that This is America is not plagiarism, we must first break down the intent of the two artists. Introductions are very different, in American Pharaoh, Jase is informing who he is, and his own account of history, racism in the black community, police brutality with lyrics like, "I'm young, and I'm Black in America, they try to attack and embarrass us.
Glover is informing us of something much more deeper that originates in our community. Harley is basically informing of the attack on our culture which has been evident and giving us his world that he is living in and seeing for the black community from his viewpoint. He is also giving insight into the view of the Black man in America. If you don't understand please Google Huey P Newton views on black men in America, very deep conversations will be found in regards to this
Now, Glover let's get started on This is America. The incoming lyrics to This Is America begin with, " We just wanna party, party just for you, we just want the money, money just for you. It is the lyrics that stand out because it is saying we want to party and we want the money that is due to you. Hmmm, very different from American Pharoh. I feel it is very important to watch the video as well to understand Glover's concept as there are many hidden messages throughout the video. In the beginning, Donald is standing off to the side while a guy sits and begins to play the guitar. It is Glover's nonchalant face as he comes up dancing and flexing and blows the man's brains out with a gun! Wow, very deep very controversial but also informing. There are influences that Glover references to as his lyrics go "Grandma told me to get your money black man, the keyword is grandma. I say this because they were here years before us and endured the years of racism and our family before that experienced slavery and coming into a world to eventually learn how to make it on our own with so many obstacles. His message seems to state get your money and stay out of the way because in the end just like the video when sh@t hits the fan we will all be running.
I do believe that Glover is trying to wake up this generation of our culture to change our perspective and to change our habits because the views of the black man in america are beginning to become very evident as of today. We can say that all lives matter and they most definitely do but what about the young unarmed to be clear black man is murdered by a white cop who feared for his life but was not physically assaulted as opposed to all of the videos shown on present cop shows that show someone of another race shooting or murdering an officer. So I feel that Donald Glover aka Childish Gamino is definitely sending a message in which Jace Harley is too, I believe they are two talented artists with two very deep perspectives. So take a listen to American Pharaoh by Jace Harley and tell me what you think!
