As someone who eats, sleeps and breathes all things pop culture, it was a no brainer I would tune in to watch "American Crime Story: The People v. O.J Simpson." Although I was not alive during the trial, I knew some basic details: the car chase, the glove, the verdict and the world’s first glance at the Kardashians. What I didn’t know was how “on-edge” I would be throughout the entire first episode.
Ryan Murphy, creator of much-loved shows such as "Glee" and "American Horror Story," co-executive produced this new show on FX. So with that information in mind, you know this show will be worthwhile because basically Ryan Murphy = good TV.
It pretty much is a given that the casting will be amazing with Ryan Murphy in charge. Celebrities such as Murphy-favorite Sarah Paulson, Cuba Gooding Jr., John Travolta and Connie Brittan (!) are featured in this miniseries. Also, David Schwimmer (aka Ross Geller) plays Robert Kardashian (!!!). Can someone say casting on fleek?
This show deals with many important issues—race, sexism, celebrity, our corrupt legal system and the huge role media plays (just to name a few). The issues that were brought up in this trial have made a profound impact on life today. For instance, thanks to the constant news coverage of the case, around-the-clock news coverage is now a normal thing in our society. Also, the Kardashians are now a household name.
One episode in, and to be perfectly honest, I am hooked. Sure, I know what is going to happen at the end, but for someone who was not alive to see this case unfold, it is very helpful to see it play out in this manner. I am beginning to gain understanding about why things are the way they are now in the 21 years following this pivotal case.
I think that this show is necessary for the people of my generation who were either not alive for this case or too young to really remember it. Because of the production value, writing and casting, this has all the potential to not only be a great show but also an important one.
You can watch "American Crime Story" Wednesday nights on FX at 10/9c.
