Are you questioning the way our country is headed? Do you ever feel like the grass is greener somewhere else, or in someone else’s shoes? I’d like to send this reminder.
This morning, I was awoken by my alarm clock that I bought at Walmart. I then got up, turned up the heat a few degrees, and proceeded up the stairs to my bathroom. I took a steamy hot shower for a little longer than usual knowing that it was only 9 degrees outside. I then got out, dried off, and started making myself breakfast. After, I went back to my room, decided what I was going to wear that day and got myself dressed. Went out and started my truck about 10 minutes before I planned on leaving to let it warm up. Came inside, flipped on the news, and when it was time for me to leave for work, I left. I stopped at Tim Horton's and got myself a coffee, and then off to work it was.
The point of this story you ask? Well, it occurred to me that before 5:30 this morning, I had been able to do more, with more freedom than many living on this earth could ever dream of. I owe some thanks for that, and I would like to thank the United States for this freedom and prosperity I get to live out every day.
People in some other countries cannot just drive to Walmart and buy an alarm clock. Some can’t even find clean water to sip, much less take a hot shower. Being able to control the temperature of my house by the touch of a button would leave people in some parts of the world in absolute shock, as they do not even have shelter from the elements at all. To be able to open my refrigerator and choose what I’m in the mood for, rather than what I can scrounge up that day, if anything at all, is something to appreciate endlessly. Even to have my own vehicle, and be able to virtually waste my gas just to make myself more comfortable on my way to work is something that I am extremely lucky for. Picking out my clothes, rather than making some, or wearing the same ones day after day is often underappreciated by many Americans, including myself. Also, being able to tap into what is going on in the world at the touch of a button is something many people can’t even imagine having as a part of their daily life, some even ever seeing a television. Stopping on my way to work and getting coffee is just one more example of our lucky non-stop lives that cause us to often overlook all of what we have.
I feel like there are so many people who overlook this blessing they are given to live in this country. Do not mistake this for me thinking this country is 100 percent perfect, because of course it is not. No person, place, or thing is perfect. However, the beauty in this country is that each individual citizen has a say in making this country more and more perfect every single day. One person could have one idea that sparks a change in this country and that should not go overlooked.
