As this election season continues to unfold, women and the mistreatment of women is becoming an increasingly hot topic. Women continue to be brought up and I can’t help but think that this is mostly due to the fact that a woman is the Democratic nominee for President of the United States for the first time ever.
I have been in leadership positions since I was in elementary school. You could even say since I was two years old when I became a big sister. I can tell you that being in a position of leadership, in any capacity requires you to be on your best behavior because you are now an example. You must be mindful of every action because if you mess up you will be scrutinized and your responsibility and credibility will be taken away. Women especially have to be mindful of their actions because women have to work two times harder for everything as they are already at a disadvantage from the patriarchy in this world.
Why is this not true for presidential candidate Donald Trump?
The President of the United States is our representative. We cannot have a president that sexually assaults women. If we did, that would tell our world and our children that this kind of behavior is okay. And it is not.
Women have come so far. We have been fighting for so long. And women have so much farther to go. If anyone thinks that our fight is almost over they are wrong. If anyone thinks that our fight is pointless and we should give up they are wrong. This fight to end the injustice can be won, but we as a society need to stop allowing people to continually degrade women and get away with it.
But we need help. We need a leader to support women and who better than our president. Trump will not be what women need. Quite frankly I’m not even sure why he is still being considered a qualified and credible candidate for president and why there are people supporting him. Why are women supporting him?
Would you support the guy who made you uncomfortable because he stared at you too long and in the wrong places? Would you support the guy who whistled at you and shouted names from his car as you were out for a run? Would you support the guy who will not take “No” for an answer?
I wouldn’t ever support “that guy” and not just because I am a woman who respects other women, but because I am a human being who wants to preserve humanity.
I’m not really sure how it has all come this far but it hasn’t gone too far yet. We have the amazing opportunity to not allow this behavior to be tolerated. We can send the message that this is unacceptable and we should all expect more out of the leader of the free world, a free world in which many do not feel as free as others.
We have something that many are still fighting for today: a voice. Every voice will be heard in this election with every vote cast. Speak yours. And when you speak, think about what you want to say. Do you want to say that you agree that it is okay to talk about women as sexual objects? Or do you believe that women deserve more—that America deserves more.
