I Am A Communication Studies Major

And I'm proud of it.

I Am A Communication Studies Major
Temple University

For a while, I did not like being asked what my major is because it required me to tell people that I am a communication major. I have never been ashamed of my major, but every communication major knows that you do not always get the response you had hoped for when you tell people what you are majoring in. People often respond by saying "so your major is easy" or asking "can you even get a job with that?" After hearing them so many times, you begin to grow tired of the innocent, yet still insulting responses and having to constantly explain yourself. I eventually realized that the field of communications is one of the most unique and interesting fields that exists and I should not be afraid to share how great it is with the rest of the world. I now welcome the opportunity to tell people my major and explain what it is all about.

Communication studies is an academic discipline that focuses on the verbal, nonverbal and written forms of human communication. Students and professionals in this field primarily deal with the mass communication process. There are multiple sub-categories within mass communication, including advertising, broadcasting, graphic design, journalism and public relations. With that being said, it is clear that there are many different careers that translate from a degree in communication studies.

Communication is a field that allows for creativity. The objective of all forms of communication is to develop and deliver a message. This message can be expressed in a variety of different ways. It can be expressed through an event, advertisement, promotion, film and much more. The great thing about communication is that there is no one single way to go about doing things. There are so many different options and the possibilities are endless. I look forward to the future and the opportunities that a degree in communication studies will bring me.

Sure, it may be true that I do not have to study as much as people in other majors, but that does not mean that my major is any less difficult. If there is one thing that being a communication major has taught me it is that everybody's major is tough in its own way. Everyone has classes that they struggle in, as well as assignments and exams that they stress over. I have developed a respect for students of all academic backgrounds because I know firsthand what it is like to have people doubt the quality of the work that you do. It is my hope that everyone develops this same respect and appreciation for all of the great things that people from different majors are doing.

In all of my years of education, I do not believe that I had a learning experience that I could clearly connect to the real world until I began taking communication courses. Communication is an essential part of everyday life. Whether you like it or not, you will always have to deal with people and talk to them. Communication studies courses teach students how to properly and effectively communicate with others, which I believe is something that every person can benefit from.

The next time someone begins to think that communication studies is an easy major, I hope they remember that their favorite commercial, sporting event, television series or music festival would not be possible without a communication major. Maybe then they will think twice about saying our major is easy.

I could not be happier to have found my passion in the field of communication. I am truly proud to be a communication studies major and I am even more proud of the work that I, as well as others in this field, do every day.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
