If there are two things in this world that you can count on me doing, it is sleeping whenever I want regardless of if I should be sleeping or not and standing up for myself whenever it is needed. I do not like to be walked all over or made a fool of myself. I spent two years in a relationship where I was walked all over and I had no voice in anything. I have surely made up for this by finding my voice and always standing up for myself, no matter the situation.
Many people think that it is easier to keep their thoughts to themselves rather than speak up and cause drama. I think that it is better to deal with a little drama and stand up for yourself and the things that you believe in rather than hiding your thoughts and feelings in a shell. I strongly believe that even if standing up for yourself means going against a group, a single person, or even a close friend, you should do it. If you are worried about losing people when you fight for yourself, that is normal. However, if they are your true friends, they will see where you are coming from and respect and honor what you are saying. If they don’t, then you are better off without them in your life.
There have been plenty times in my life when I have found myself in situations that require me to stand up for myself. Before college, I never really did. I was afraid and wanted to keep everyone happy by keeping my mouth shut. Once I realized that it was better to speak up, that is what I started to do, especially when it comes to things that I am passionate about.
If anyone ever brings up mental health to me in a negative way, I will go against them and stand up for mental health awareness. I have done this and I have lost friends over it, but I have never once regretted doing so. If anything, I regret the times when I hear people speaking poorly about mental health and I do not say anything for whatever reason. If there is something that you are passionate about or believe strongly in, then stand up against those who disagree with you. You are allowed to speak about how you feel and the things that you believe in. This is a human right, so do not be afraid to do so.
There will be times in everyone's lives when they are personally attacked and bullied. In these situations, you need to stand up for yourself. It is going to be hard. It is going to be scary. However, in the end, it is going to be OK. Life is too short to not stand up for yourself and to not speak about how you feel. Keeping everything bottled in will just end up hurting you in some way one day.
Find your voice. Fight against the people who are trying to keep you down. Always stand up for yourself.
Here is a little quote to inspire you all to stand up for yourself and your beliefs.
“Take a stand and speak your truth. Realize you are worthy of being loved and don’t let anyone treat you less than. It is up to you to respect and protect your spirit. This is your life and your journey, make the best of it. Don’t let anyone stand in the way of your happiness.” – Melanie Koulouris
