Alternative Spring Break: Rocking Roanoke For A Week
Chloe Galloway

This spring break was one for the books. While many people chose to spend theirs with friends and family, on the beach somewhere, or at home sleeping, I spent mine serving the beautiful city of Roanoke, Virginia. Me and six other women jumped in a van and drove the three and a half hours to spend our break with people we didn't know. I think it's fair to say that none of us realized the massive impact the trip would have on each of us.

For anyone who is unaware of what an alternative spring break is, it is a school sponsored service trip which is usually led by a student. The student leader of this trip decided to contact a service group already set in Roanoke called REACH. REACH is a non-profit organization focused on getting young people excited about community service and the well-being of others. They are run out of First Christian Church and led by Pastor Tim Dayton and an amazing staff. They not only focused on serving the community but also growing us as stronger individuals. They provided us with a week packed full with projects and discussions, but also fun and lifelong friendships.

Each day was filled with service projects ranging from food banks to animal shelters. Every experience we had gave us all a new outlook and appreciation for the things we usually take for granted. We documented the days with pictures and Facebook posts to show people how each of us can make a difference. The end of each day consisted of a reflection by each group member and it was amazing to hear how the same day affected everyone differently. By the end of the week, we all grew as individuals, but also as better friends.

So, if you're wondering if you should partake in an alternative break trip, I would absolutely recommend. I can't write down the feelings I had or the experiences I felt in full detail, but believe me when I say it was one of the best times of my life. I loved working with the people and getting to know their stories. I loved helping those who could not help themselves. But most of all, I loved being able to walk away from a job knowing that I was able to make a difference. I don't think there is a word to describe the absolute satisfaction obtained from serving others without anything in return. The fun of this kind of trip is that you can have your friends join and you all can make a difference together while making memories along the way!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
