Roommates are one of a kind. Whether you like it or not, they see the best and the worst in you. Having roommates is an experience like no other, and hopefully, it's a positive one. I got lucky -- my experience was incredible. From freshman year to junior year, I had different kinds of roommates but one thing remains constant - I made unforgettable friendships. To my roommates, past and present - thank you for:
1. Listening to me.
No matter when, if my roommate was in the shower, doing homework, drunk at a party, I could always pull them aside to talk about a boy, a test I'm worried about, my biggest fears - anything.
2. Picking me up when I'm down.
"I wish you could see what we see, you're one of a kind," is what my roommates this past year reminded me of in tough times.
3. Being with me when I cry.
When you have roommates, you always have a shoulder to cry on. Someone to comfort you. Even if they don't want to, they are kind of forced to since you know, you share the same space. Either way, it's nice to know you're not alone.
4. Introducing me to new music.
My freshman year roommate got me into country music and now it's all I listen to.
5. Letting me blast my music and sing in the shower.
The shower has the best acoustics. Sorry if you don't like Justin Bieber's album.
6. Baking chocolate chip cookies with me at 2 a.m. after a party.
The only way to satisfy drunk cravings.
7. Working out with me.
Whether that meant going to the gym together or just doing burpees and squats in our living room then gorging ourselves with pizza rolls to reward ourselves.
8. Having impromptu deep conversations.
Our religious beliefs, debates on evolution, what we want in future husbands, our dream jobs - thank you for letting me learn about you.
9. Telling me when I shouldn't wear that dress out.
You know, the one you think you look good in, but in reality you just look like an Amish milkmaid. Save it for Halloween.
10. Always leaving parties with me.
I know I will never have to find my own way home.
11. Curling my hair.
Getting your hair played with and done by someone is one of the best feelings in the world.
12. Wishing me luck on exams.
It's almost as good as having your mom pack you a lunch and leaving an inspirational note for you.
13. Loving my parents.
You meet them once and then it's a hot topic of discussion and I love it. (By the way, they love you too.)
14. Going out for late-night ice cream.
It's never too late for Hoffman's. Or Ben and Jerry's. Or any kind of ice cream.
15. Carpooling.
Going to class or outings is automatically more exciting.
16. Falling asleep to "Friends" every night.
Every night with my roommate sophomore year, we would dose in and out of sleep with the comfort of The Rembrandts' "I'll Be There For You," always remembering to clap three times during the theme song.
17. Sharing a box of mac and cheese when neither of us want to cook.
Kraft, you are a lifesaver.
18. Washing my dish when I forgot to.
Thank you for not exiling me. I know day-old plates smell like death.
19. Letting me try your make-up and clothes and anything else I decide I like.
I don't know how you put up with me. I change my mind a lot.
20. Telling me the truth, even if it's not what I want to hear.
This one speaks for itself.
21. Having secret signals to get us out of awkward situations.
That hand signal I always do at parties isn't coincidence - it's to get that creepy guy away. Fast. It's to signal back up. It's a pretty good system we girls have.
22. Telling me when you wanted some of my food.
Although not often, since I had healthy crap. OK, so it was more of me asking for your food.
23. Letting me eat your food.
You guys always had better snacks anyway. Thanks for sharing when I asked.
24. Ruining my mascara since I'm laughing so hard I'm crying.
This one's my favorite. I can't count how many times we've laughed like that because it's been so many. And for that I am so thankful.
I am really going to miss all of this at the end of college. There's nothing like it. I've been touched by some pretty hysterical and brilliant girls who made my college experience one for the books.
