Everything I Learned In Rincon, Puerto Rico

  1. Culture yourself! All those food trucks you pass on the roads, take a chance on them. Puerto Rican Pinchos are so fresh and so good. Pinchos are basically kabobs, but way better. Try and brush up on some high school Spanish, they'll appreciate the effort.
  2. Everyone is genuinely nice. They don’t want anything in return. They engage in conversation before you and their culture is to kiss you on the cheek, so don't be taken back by that.
  3. Local knowledge is the best way to experience the culture of the island! On any trip you take, always try and befriend a local! I was lucky enough to meet and hangout with a rad surfer girl whom I will forever be grateful for showing me around!
  4. Get back up. Every time you get knocked down, always get up and try again. Rincon is a major surf town so of course I had to take a jab at it. The waves were a little large for a beginner; I basically just rolled around in the waves. After stubbing my toes on the reef every time I got pummeled by a wave, I still got up. Don’t ever give up on something you set your heart onto. You'll never be able to learn how to surf if you don't get back up.
  5. Explore as many waterfalls as you can! Many of them are very secluded and the trek up them are amazing. Nothing like you would ever see back home, I can tell you that! Relish in the beauty of the natural waterfall for as long as you possibly can. You will not regret it.
  6. “Catch flights, not feelings!”-live by it. We're all so young, we deserve to put ourselves first and explore the land around us. Screw young love, love yourself first!
  7. Take less pictures, really enjoy your surroundings and who you are with! The absolute best thing about Rincon is the bad cell phone service. I wasn't lost in my phone the whole trip like all kids are nowadays. I love photographing but I decided I would try and limit the phone usage this trip and I am so glad I did. I don't think I would have experienced the true beauty of the island if I hadn't.
  8. Happiness is the key to a great life. My trip made me appreciate where I am fortunate enough to live. It made me realize to make the best of what I have and the land around me, instead of longing for more sun where I don’t live (yet).
  9. Music Festivals are unreal. It's like a whole new planet. I had never been to a festival before. Now that I have, I want to go to as many as I possibly can. You feel so alive; I recommend everyone see Zedd and DJ Snake at least once in their lives.
  10. Listen to their music! Reggaeton is my new jam, it's so up beat and fun! You can't help but dance when you hear it; Shaky Shaky by Daddy Yankee and Despacito by Luis Fonzo is a must listen to when in Puerto Rico! I first heard both of them in a cab ride and I've been playing them on repeat to take me back to the experiences on the island!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
