#AllLivesMatter's Silence After Charlottesville Says So Much

Do all lives really matter, or just the ones important to you?

Dear "All Lives Matter,"

It’s been a while! How have you been lately? I’m just writing this letter to check up on you since you haven’t been as vocal as usual lately. Of course, there haven't been a lot of Black Lives Matter rallies to complain about lately either, but that’s just a coincidence, right?

Over the past few years, you’ve made your stance known. You have stated that you support the lives of all people, whether they’re “white, black, or purple,” to quote you. You’ve spoken up during protests against cops that have shot innocent lives, and have said that if they didn’t want to get shot, then they should have respected what the police officer was saying. You have been there to remind us of the victims’ criminal pasts, their thug-like appearances, and their notorious bad behavior regardless of their stellar GPAs or paternal instincts. You’ve even shown up to clarify that black lives aren’t the only lives that matter these days. Basically, you’ve been there to keep us in the know about what lives truly do matter.

So when the riot in Charlottesville happened, and it was shown that the protesters began chanting, “White lives matter” over and over, I figured the same thing would happen.

I waited patiently for you to step forward and point out specific people in the rally, and what their criminal history looked like. I sat on the edge of my seat anticipating the “white lives aren’t the only ones that matter” rhetoric that would surely be uttered by at least a few notable members of your group.

I waited patiently for condemnation, but it seems like that hasn’t happened yet.

So I’m confused. I thought it was ALL lives that mattered, not just the ones that mattered to you. While the president is condemning the behavior and then taking it back, you guys have remained noticeably silent. Others are identifying a number of white supremacists who rioted this weekend, figured out their names and places of employment, and have successfully gotten a number of them fired. Meanwhile, you continue to sit on your asses and remain silent about the matter.

It’s just amazing to me. You spend months insisting that you’re fighting for all lives, and that you aren’t part of a racist movement, but when you have a chance to condemn the Nazis for shouting “white lives matter,” you have nothing to say.nd that you aren’t part of a racist movement, but when you have a chance to condemn the Nazis for shouting “white lives matter,” you have nothing to say.

Your silence on the matter speaks more than your decision to take a side ever will.

Though I shouldn’t be surprised. Your behavior towards Justine Damond’s death proved exactly what I originally thought about you: that your movement is only defending the lives of those that you care about. It was never about all lives for you. Of course, if individual ALM supporters feel differently, then that’s your belief. But the majority of the behavior shown from your “all inclusive” movement as a whole have proved that you don’t practice what you preach. Had you guys treated the deplorable people at Charlottesville like you treated shooting victims in the past then I might be convinced that you truly care about all lives, but unless that happens I don’t believe you’re as caring of all lives as you claim to be.

Sincerely,

Someone who truly believes that all lives matter.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
