I am no music critic or rap historian but I do listen to various genres of music from soul, r&b, pop, alternative, gospel, to jazz and many more but not everything I listen to is mainstream either. The excitement and anticipation that I have been given just waiting on Kendrick Lamar's new album to be released.
Many people are fond of Kendrick because he's like a hip-hop messiah prancing around spreading messages that are intended to provoke awareness of society's shortcomings. Right? Nowadays with many songs especially of the rap genre which are considered bubble gum, sing along songs that lack a powerful message just an enticing beat and if lucky maybe a dance that goes along with it.
I've been a fan of Kendrick Lamar since his mixtape section 80 in which "Blow My High" was the first song that I liked other than the ones that were already playing on the radio and music channels. Many people like to compare him to the rapper J. Cole, which I think that he is a unique rapper in his own sense but if I had to choose between the two, deciding which one's concert I would attend that was scheduled on the same day. I would pick Kendrick because he is "doper" in terms of lyrics.
Let's talk about his latest album then, "Untitled" in which everyone song is absent without a name, which leaves me guessing what I'm going to actually be listening to. Well since I know Kendrick Lamar's rap style I know there was a small chance of hearing a trap song or an r&b song. I expected some in-depth philosophical, inspiring and insightful lyrics and that's what I got from listening to the "Untitled" album.
Every one of his songs on the album has the date it was created, in which you notice that Kendrick has been saving songs for the moment when they would be great enough to be resurrected. From years 2013-2016 so there's about a three-year span in the creation of his songs, even though many music artists say they still record music even though they haven't had a recent song on the radio, it's hard for us to believe.
Let me be honest, Kendrick is intelligent, so his lyrics are to be analyzed closely or you might miss the importance of the song, many of the songs grew on me the more I've listened to his album day by day. Sounds of funk, jazz, soul, and smooth rap seem to be all incorporated in this short but good album.
Some of you may not be fond of hip hop or rap music and some of you might live for this genre of music, being music artists yourselves. But this album I believe is worthy of anyone's ear which may persuade some of you to actually like hip hop or, at least, Kendrick's hip-hop. What do you all think about Kendrick's "Untitled" album, is it a hit or miss?
