Given all the newfound time I have over my winter break, when I'm not working, I like to reminisce my old favorite songs and explore by listening to some awesome music I haven't had the pleasure of hearing before. Oftentimes, I will know a hit song or two from an artist that I know I really enjoy, however I never have gotten the chance to listen to their whole album. Below I've complied five great albums encompassing several different genre's of music that I recommend listening to if you're looking for something fantastic and new.
1. The Killers- Hot Fuss (2004)
Hot Fuss, the first album by The Killers, explores themes of jealousy, partying, struggling with change, reminiscing on the past, and broken relationships and dreams. The album explores interesting electric and synth sounds, and has a fresh indie rock sound.
Favorite song on the album: All These Things That I've Done
2. Folie à Deux- Fall out Boy (2008)
Fall out Boy's fourth album Folie à Deux, which means Madness for Two, has a great mix of pop punk and rock bops. One of my favorite parts of this album is how the end of one song flows seamlessly into the next on the album, almost as if the album is a continuous story. The album's lyrics are a stream of consciousness and thought-provoking, going from failed relationships to self-reflection, to a look into fame and popularity.
Favorite song on the album: She's My Winona
3. Parachutes- Coldplay (2000)
Coldplay's first album is full of bittersweet romantic lyrics. The album previews songs about unrequited love and wondering about the world around us. The album has a soft rock feel, with simple guitar chords and melancholy piano melodies.
Favorite song on the album: Don't Panic
4. Missy Elliot- This Is Not A Test! (2003)
Missy Elliot's fifth album, like her past albums, is heavily R&B influenced and attempts experimental, alternative types of rap. The album features collaborations with several different artists and includes a multitude of lyrics about having a good time.
Favorite song on the album: Bomb Intro/Pass That Dutch
5. P!nk- I'm Not Dead (2006)
P!nk's fourth album has a great mix of fun, pop party hits, and heavy lyrical pieces that can easily resonate with listeners. The lyrics show off an amazing vocal range and are honest and witty stories about relationships, politics, and nostalgia.
Favorite song on the album: Dear Mr. President
6. Gavin DeGraw- Chariot (2003)
DeGraw's first album is soulful and catchy and has soft songs that you won't be able to stop humming. Many of the songs are sensitive and intimate, as they are written about love and it's strength, as well as the beauty of relationships.
Favorite song on the album: Belief
7. Kanye West- Graduation (2006)
Kanye's third album is a dedication to his past, as well as a commentary on hisgrowth and success. The songs all cover different styles and genres, and the album is heavily collaborative, with great beats and flow.
