2015 was a great year for music, and 2016 should be just as interesting. With a new year comes new music, so here are some highly anticipated albums to look forward to in the coming months.
1. Ty Segall - Emotional Mugger.
Ty Segall is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Laguna Beach, California. His forte? Lo-fi garage and psychedelic rock. Since 2008, Segall has recorded eight studio albums, the most recent of which was “Manipulator,” released in 2014. His next project, “Emotional Mugger,” is planned to drop on Jan. 22 of this year. Segall, an eccentric artist to say the least, teased the album’s release by mailing a VHS copy to the online music magazine Pitchfork. He’s also setup an "Emotional Mugger" hotline at 1-800-281-2968, which plays an eery message from Segall himself.
Here he is rocking the socks off of Pitchfork Music Festival in 2012.
2. Blood Orange - Title TBA.
Blood Orange is the stage name of London-born musician Dev Hynes. Following Blood Orange’s debut album “Coastal Grooves” and his sophomore release “Cupid Deluxe”, Hynes is expected to release a new project sometime this year. Blood Orange thrives on Hynes’s masterful music production, electronic bass lines, and smooth R&B vibes. You may have heard his single “Sandra’s Smile”, which dropped in October of last year. The track is dedicated to the late Sandra Bland who died in police custody in Texas in July 2015. There’s no telling if the single will appear on the full length album, but if the record sounds anything like “Sandra’s Smile”, it should be a good one.
3. Rhianna - Anti.
The pop superstar out of Barbados has kept fans eagerly awaiting her eighth album for a year now, beginning with her single “FourFiveSeconds” that released in January 2015. The album is also likely to include her second, ultra-popular single of 2015, “Bitch Better Have My Money”. With rumors circulating of the impending drop for months, it’s only a matter of time before Rhianna graces us with another hit record.
4. Real Estate - Title TBA.
This indie rock/ dream pop group from New Jersey has recorded three albums since its formation in 2009. Its latest record, “Atlas”, debuted at number 34 on the Billboard Top 100 in March 2014. The band pumps out dreamy beach vibes with ease, and its next album should be no exception. They have yet to give us a release date or album title, but be on the lookout for the record just in time for summer 2016.
5. Kanye West - SWISH.
So we really have no clue when Kanye plans to release his new album, which he is currently calling “SWISH”, but Ye experts fully expect it to drop this year. Before May 2015, he planned to title the album “So Help Me God”, but he let fans know via twitter that was no longer the case. He also tweeted, “I might change it again but that’s the name now”. We all know Kanye’s middle name might as well be “Unpredictable”, so don’t be surprised if he releases the record on a whim with little to no promotion. The album will contain his smash hit “All Day” featuring Allan Kingdom and Theophilus London.
Fellow G.O.O.D Music artist Pusha T had this to say about the upcoming release:
“The Kanye 'Swish' project, you know, he comes when he want to come. I don’t even bother him about his situation… I don’t even want to talk to him.”
6. Sia - This Is Acting.
Sia is an Australian singer, songwriter, and amazing talent who’s work is far more dynamic than many people realize. She is responsible for writing David Guetta 2011 hit record “Titantium”, as well as Rhianna’s “Diamonds”, Beyonce’s “Pretty Hurts”, and Ne-Yo’s “Let Me Love You” (all huge successes). Her most recent album, entitled “1000 Forms of Fear”, was led by her hit single “Chandelier”, which debuted at number eight on Billboard’s Hot 100. Sia has one of the most unique and addicting voices I have heard in years, so expect “This Is Acting” to give you plenty of chills on January 29.
7. Frank Ocean - Boys Don’t Cry.
I’ve been listening to Frank Ocean since he dropped his first mixtape, “Nostalgia, Ultra”, in 2011. Ocean is known both for his solo career and his involvement with Odd Future and Tyler, the Creator. In 2012 Ocean released his first major label album, “Channel Orange”, which featured big names like John Mayer and Andre 3000. Ocean hinted at his sophomore record, “Boys Don’t Cry”, on his Tumblr last year, and it was rumored to come out in summer 2015. Fans of Frank, including superstar Adele, were distraught when it didn’t. Now we’re expecting the follow-up record to debut sometime in 2016, and it is sure to be full of Ocean’s signature smooth vocals and unique instrumentation.
