Hello again! This week will be the first album review that I've done. With this review, I have decided to use an album that has recently been released meaning in the past month or two. So I chose The Head and the Heart's new album, "Signs of Light". I have been a big fan of The Head and the Heart for the past few years, but this album surprised me because it is one of the best I've heard all year and I listen to a lot of music.
"Signs of Light" by The Head and the Heart was released on September 9, 2016. This is the band's third album since releasing their debut album in 2010. "All We Ever Knew" was the first single released off their most recent album and has had lots of success since being released. On Billboard.com, The Head and the Heart's "All We Ever Knew" has been on the charts for 22 weeks now and is currently at its peak position so far, which is 4.
Each song from this album shows a different side of The Head and the Heart and their versatility. The first song, on the album is "All awe Ever Knew". This song starts off with a straight on command of lyrics while accompanied by light drum taps. The song then works its way into a nice, smooth and peaceful groove with a wonderful slur of lyrics. The band continues to come in each at a time and help progress the song by then all coming together for the chorus. This part of the song just makes you want to stand up no matter where you are and just dance. Following the chorus, a nice slew of la's and da's are sung. "All We Ever Knew" is a fantastic song that shows The Head and the Heart's ability to go from one part of a song where it has been torn apart and just focuses on one certain member of the band, but then go to a part where the whole band is coming together to create this rocking rhythm and chorus just really shows how good these guys are.
"City of Angels" showcases a lighter sound at the beginning with a steady rock guitar riff. As the lyrics begin, the sound of this tune is much different from the first song off the album and helps showcase the talent that The Head and the Heart have.
Third, "Rhythm & Blues" provides us with another light rock tune. The Head and the Heart decide to change the direction of tunes and give us a nice, laid back song that is so relaxing and has such a nice smooth rhythm.
"False Alarm" decides to take us on a journey of a nice light rock shuffle with smooth vocals. "False Alarm" showcases The Head and the Heart's ability to even turn a laid back song into a hit.
Fifth, "Dreamer" is a light tune with wispy vocals and a good back bone beat to it that would be fit for a day full of cloud watching. The song starts to pick up when it hits the chorus and is almost like the wind and begins to push the clouds. "Dreamer" becomes a steady paced song with a rock feeling to it.
"Library Magic" features a more folkish like sound and really starts to groove after the first stanza is sung. If you were to look up the lyrics they might not make any sense, but if you really just listen to the music and the creation that The Head and the Heart have made. The tune doesn't go many places as far as intensity and sound goes, but vocally starts to become more distinct as the two singers begin to separate from each other and sing two parts. "Library Magic" contains interesting and questionable lyrics, but really is magic once you sit back, close your eyes and just listen.
Next, "Turn It Around" starts off with a fast pace and a good shuffle to it. As the song continues to have a groove to it, the vocals continue to glide over the beat and stay strong. This tune is very simple, but is also very fun to listen to although it is quite repetitive.
"Colors" begins with a nice, quiet groove and barely heard lyrics that would probably never be heard in a big city. As the song progresses, I start to get a picture in my head of colors in the sky almost like a sunset. With a nice, gentle breeze on a warm summer night with a bonfire crackling and friends laughing. "Colors" has a fantastic rhythm to it and vocals that slowly fade away into the abyss. I imagine "Colors" being a perfect summer song for intimate nights with friends.
Up next, "Take a Walk" offers a brighter sound and rhythm to it. The dual harmony seems to fit the song perfectly and showcase the band'a amazing vocals. With wonderful, light guitar riffs around each corner of the song it really provides a relaxing vibe to it and a perfect song for a summer night as well.
"Oh My Dear" is a very alt rock based ballad with soothing vocals that melt in your ears as you hear them. The guitar starts to be haunting as it is accompanied by an echo and bittersweet vocals. "Oh My Dear" focuses on the vocals and guitar and reminds us the versatility that The Head and the Heart have and is able to provide us with a perfect song that has been stripped down elegantly.
"I Don't Mind" is a very groovy and dance based song. Vocals are very quiet and light, but blend in perfectly with the groovy beat. The Head and the Heart's ability to switch from a light and groovy beat with quiet, but smooth vocals to a louder and thicker beat with louder vocals is just incredible.
Second to last, "Your Mother's Eyes" begins with a mist of beats that eventually form one simple beat that begins the groove with every now and then a gentle breeze known as the vocals that passes through the mist. This tune is very light and continues the same groove while the vocals lead the song to new places as it carries the mist into the sky. "Your Mother's Eyes" has insanely incredible vocals with an obsessive beat although the song is very light and simple it gives the mind an amazing picture and is very soothing to the soul.
Lastly, "Signs of Light" is very piano based and is one of the few tunes on the album that mainly features the piano. The piano starts off real slow and is moving from rhythm to rhythm and chord to chord while here and there vocals will pop out of the water and appear. Then slowly, the rhythm starts to become faster. "Signs of Light" also features a beautiful violin and continues to showcase their versatility. As the song progresses so does the sound and it starts to get louder and louder as the song goes on. "Signs of Light" is a beautifully composed piece that is very simple and elegant and is a great closer for this all ready wonderfully put together record by The Head and the Heart.
I was very impressed by The Head and the Hearts third album, "Signs of Light" and I hope you either were too or will be when you listen to it.
Thanks again for reading! I hope you enjoyed and listen to more music.
