In the world of country music, the name Dave Cobb most certainly strikes a chord. Cobb, a long time Nashville record producer, has worked with the likes of Chris Stapleton, Jamey Johnson, Sturgill Simpson, Shooter Jennings and Jason Isbell and can now add many more names to his already extensive resume with his latest release "Southern Family."
The album features the talents of artists John Paul White, Jason Isbell, Brent Cobb, Miranda Lambert, Morgane Stapleton with Chris Stapleton, Zac Brown, Jamey Johnson, Anderson East, Holly Williams, Brandy Clark, Shooter Jennings, and Rich Robinson. Being a concept album, "Southern Family" focuses on one of the most important facets of life: family. Mothers, fathers, grandparents, grandchildren, and spouses are all central themes and the importance of these relationships is emphasized throughout; culminating in a heartwarming compilation of personal songs.
However, beyond the concept of family and relationships is a more amazing truth to the album: the extent of talent featured and the quality of the music. The artists who make up Cobb's "Southern Family" are some of the biggest names in recording and songwriting and have created a piece that is truly unmatched in music. Furthermore, the lyrics give the listener an intimate glimpse into the lives of these artists and allow us to grow through their experiences and exploration.
Leading off the album is John Paul White singing "Simple Song." Many may remember White as the male vocalist of the acclaimed duo, the Civil Wars, which also featured Joy Williams and won four Grammys in their time together. However, in 2014, Williams and White announced they would be parting ways in order to pursue their own careers, leaving fans wondering what was next. With "Simple Song," White showcases his songwriting talents and incredible vocals, proving he is more than capable on his own and making admirers excited for what is to come. Hear John Paul White sing "Simple Song" in the video below:
One of the hottest names in country music, Chris Stapleton, also makes an appearance on the album, however, he almost takes a backseat to the incredible vocals of his wife, Morgane. The Stapleton duo sing a rendition of "You Are My Sunshine," a song they have long covered in their live shows. Although not an original, the Stapletons effectively make the song their own. Pairing Morgane's booming vocals with her husband's drop-d tuned electric guitar makes for a stunning rendition of the childhood classic. In the video below, the couple discusses the song and Morgane humorously comments on her husband's ability to "mess things up;" but in a good way, of course.
