The new director has been revealed, May is having issues, and the vigilante adventures of Quake continue. Let’s get into this (spoilers ahead).
So, last week, we were introduced to a number of potential new directions that the SHIELD story might go. We were introduced to Ghost Rider, saw the continuing adventures of the Daisy versus the watchdogs and saw the tension between the members of the old team as they struggled to deal with the new organization of SHIELD. All interesting points, but we didn’t really know from last week’s episode who the main villain of this season was going to be. Ghost Rider might be a little, uh, unstable, but he’s not deliberately plotting evil.
I think we have a pretty good idea of who the villains are going to be now.
Of course, their motivation-and situation-is still greatly shrouded… literally. All we know for sure is that these ghosts are pissed, and that they aren’t above killing some blokes to get whatever it is they want. And they’ve got shotgun-axe-hacks, unfortunately (I really just want to see him get to use that thing in a battle where it will actually be effective. Is that so wrong?).
We also got to see Director Jeffrey for the first time. I am not entirely sure what to think of him yet. He’s obviously hiding something-what director of SHIELD isn’t-but I don’t get the sense that he’s doing it maliciously. Much as I think he’s a bit of a jerk for not allowing Coulson to help May or Daisy, I get the impression that he’s doing what he thinks is right. He’s not just new HYDRA.
Of course, whether what he thinks is right is actually right remains to be seen. I have a sneaking suspicion that maybe it isn’t…
Also, he’s an inhuman, with the (seemingly exclusive) power of being able to not get rekt in a one-on-one versus one of the many women in the MCU whom are, as Simmons once put it, capable of killing someone with their bare hands.
How that came about, and what ramifications it will have on SHIELD policy, is anyone’s guess at this point. Personally, I really liked the reveal. As I stated in my last review, I am glad that the inhuman threat is no longer at the forefront, but it is definitely good to see that they haven’t been forgotten about either. The inhumans are still a big deal in-universe, whether the movies are willing to demonstrate it or not, and seeing how an inhuman director will address the problems posed by others of his kind will be very intriguing.
Finally, we have May on the crazy train. I’m really not sure how to judge this one yet. It seems like at the start of every new season one of the old team members has something go horribly wrong. Ward in Season 2, Simmons in Season 3… both of those plots went directions I liked, but could never have predicted in advance. So I’m not going to waste my time on this one; suffice it to say I’m excited to see what’s next-in two weeks that is >:(.
So essentially, the plot still has yet to kick into high gear, but I’m glad that they’re taking time to set things up. And from the preview of next week, it’s about to start getting intense soon.
