This past week has been one of the more difficult weeks the world of entertainment has seen in a while. This is because one of the most underappreciated comedians of all time, Charlie Murphy, the elder brother of Eddie Murphy has passed away after a hard-fought battle with leukemia. While most of his life he was seen as “Eddie Murphy’s younger brother” his ability to make you laugh uncontrollably will make Charlie Murphy one of the greatest Comedians/Entertainers ever.
Charlie Murphy was born on July 12, 1959, in Brooklyn, New York. After spending a short amount of time in jail at a young age, Charlie Murphy enlisted himself into the United States Navy and served as a boiler technician for 6 years.
During the 80’s and 90’s, Charlie Murphy started building his name in the world of entertainment having short appearances in a variety of movies. In 1993 Murphy managed to land his first major role in the movie CB4, acting alongside the one and only Chris Rock. While this was a major Milestone for the upcoming comedian, Charlie Murphy’s fame really took off after his performance on Dave Chappelle’s show. On Chappelle’s Show, Charlie Murphy served as a host to on of the funniest comedy skits in existence, Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories. During Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories, Charlie Murphy gave an inside look on his Hollywood nightlife experience’s while he was out with his brother Eddie.
In one of the Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories sketches, he described a time in which he encountered the famous musician, Prince, at a nightclub, which leads Prince to challenge Murphy and his friends to a game of basketball. The skit then provided a vivid visual representation of how Prince and his Friends embarrassed Charlie Murphy by defeating him and his crew. The skit even described how Prince served everyone pancakes after the game. In a recent interview, famous Musician Micki Free has come out and stated that Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories regarding prince was completely true.
The other Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories sketch focused on the relationship Charlie Murphy had with Rick James and was possibly the greatest moment in Charlie Murphy’s career. The sketch gives a hilarious visual representation of how Charlie Murphy often found himself getting in physical encounters with Rick James, and while they often slapped each other around, they seemed to find a way to link back up for another night out in the town.
Murphy even had the honor of co-hosting the Lost Episodes of Chappelle’s show in 2006 after Dave Chappelle left the show before season 3 was finished.
After a successful performance on Chappelle’s Show, Charlie Murphy Continued to appear in a number of popular movies and even served as a voice actor on the urban anime show, The Boondocks. Murphy even managed to land a Stand-up comedy special that first aired on Comedy Central and eventually made its way to Netflix.
No matter what role Charlie Murphy played in a movie or TV show, he always made sure he was one of the funniest acts. While Charlie Murphy’s death has taken a huge toll on the entertainment industry, we must always respect his career and acknowledge that Charlie Murphy was so much more than “Eddie Murphy’s older brother” and always remember that he will be one of the greatest entertainers in history.
